Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

We are planning on moving from ZenWorks 7 to ZCM11. I have installed ZCM 11 Server and are testing the ZenWorks Agent on our Workstations first. They are Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, 8gb ram, AMD Phenom X6 3.2Ghz CPU.

DLU works if you signin within a few minutes after the computer boots. It will hang at the "Novell Login Succeeded" if you leave it at the login screen or logout and try to log back in.

Internet Explorer will not load. Control Panel will not load. HTML emails in GroupWise will not load. CorelDraw X4 File Menu Freezes. Possibly other issues but those I know of. All symptoms disappear after uninstalling ZenWorks agent.

Made sure we installed the x86_64 client.

Testing it on a XP box appears to be working fine.

Also, I made sure to configure Locations and Networks. The workstations appear in the correct Network.

Hi Carbm1,
Do you have AV installed ? Is it Symantec 11?

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

We have AVG 2011 on these workstations.

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

Removing AVG 2011 appears to have resolved this issue. I also believe I found a TID about ZCM11 and AntiVirus dated 2/11/2011.

Anybody know a good way to list TID's instead of searching for, potentially wrong, terminology? I'd like to list ALL TID's dealing with ZCM11 and see if any of them apply to me.

Thank You,

Craig

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

Ok, I retract my statement. After returning to work this morning I am having the same problems. Internet Explorer will not launch, GroupWise froze when clicking on a web link. Computer wouldn't shutdown.

Currently not running any AntiVirus.

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

We experienced the same issue on our Win 7 machines. I opened an SR and
have been informed they are working on an FTF. In the mean time the work
around is to install the version 10.3.1 client. This has worked for us.
Because the client install didn't come from our ZCM 11 server we have to
manually run the ZAC reg command to register each workstation to our ZCM 11
server.

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

I actually skipped ZCM 10 hoping to NOT experience any of these issues... how disappointing.

Brad,

Would you mind posting if you receive any new information regarding this issue?

Thank You,

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

Hi What about disabling the ZCM 11 Endpoint security but have AVG reinstalled. I am trying to see this is the cause on our system. Worth a try on yours too. You can do this per PC go to settings and Device management > Zenworks agent> override> disable endpoint security

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

Disabling ZESM likely will not help, since some of the core drivers are
still installed for Location Awareness. Disabling certain parts of AVG
may help.

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

Looking for any information about this...

I still have NO antivirus on the machine at the moment. ZenWorks 11 still causes the machine to hang randomly. I seriously need an update about this. Its been nearly a month since the original report. If they aren't going to fix it in a timely manner then I need to know where I can get the 10.3 client so I can continue with my roll out. I can't have 50 Windows 7 clients just sitting here.

Hi,

I dont know how much help I can offer, but I do have some:
- Under ZCM 10.3.1, everything appeared to work just fine.
- ZCM 11 upgrade showed we had an error in DNS
- Not only is the Location engine critical to fix, also make sure the servers handling the Auth into ZCM are capable of doing so. I removed a server that seemed fine but a bit underpowered, to experience login time drop in half the time due to the server no longer making the client slow.
- Make sure if you have SLES servers upgraded from ZCM 10, that you move in a .properties file, according to the upgrade doc, restart the casa_atsd service afterwards and be amazed 😉

If you want to debug it further, I'm using the "50/50" technique:
- (In my setup, I've gone for 50/50 SLES/Windows ZCM servers) Only enable SLES servers for all roles, and try again after with only Windows.
- If any of the above really makes a difference, test against one and one server, if you are able to, to drill down to the faulty server/service/file.
- Make sure you dont use any proxy information on the system level, ie WinHTTP
- Regarding the wait, you can also increase debug-logging to everything to see what the DLU is doing, solved many a problem that way !!

If possible, monitor your setup too, I've setup a Icinga solution to monitor ZCM and eDir used by ZCM, DNS servers, fileservers etc to see everything ZCM uses to work and what the clients are using... Might be something else than ZCM, though it looks like it is ZCM.

Good hunting!

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

Recommend Opening an SR.

There are some test files available that Might help.
These files are quite new and just for testing at this point.

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

Has there been any new developments with this issue? I have found that my AV client to be the culprit in my environment. I am using Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 and Windows will lock up and freeze on me with the zenworks agent installed. I have tested this on both Windows 7 32-bit & 64-bit versions and both exhibit the same symptoms. Everything works fine when SEP is not installed, but as soon as it is installed, after some random amount of time, IE will not launch, some of my applications will hang, and when I try to restart, the "shutting down" screen will hang.

I should note that my workstations running Windows XP SP3 with SEP and the zenworks agent installed are working fine.

Re: Windows 7 64bit, ZCM11, Freezing

Yes,

Novell is providing an updated ZESM Agent to those who open an SR that
has resolved the issue for nearly everyone.

At some point it will be made public, but I do not have an ETA.
