Workstations don't connect (intermitently) to the inventory server

Hi all,

I'm having a problem that I just can't seem to fixe. I've set up Asset
Inventory but the workstations don't connect to the inventory server
(actualy they connect once out of every 15 or 20 tries).

I've put a few workstation in diagnostic mode to help me trouble shoot.
I've included a log in this post from one ot the workstations. The first
part of the log shows taht the workstation did contact the server and
sent its inventory. The second part of the log shows when the inventory
process dosen't work (same workstation and nothing was changed).

The problem seems to be that the workstation are not connecting to the
server...the actual message in the log below is :

Could not ConnectForScanMode to 10.10.11.11 (10.10.11.11)
server connection failure

I can ping, login to and access files on the inventory server and there
is nothing unusual in the Event Viewer.

My setup is a Standalone installation on a vmware Win2003 server (I have
this setup working ok with several clients). The local network of about
15 workstations. Xp firewall is not used. The server name and ip address
is defined in my DNS.

Are there any logs on the server that I could check to why the
workstation are not connecting with the Inventory server?

Anybody have a clue?

Hi Glenn.

I'm testing ZAM 7.5 on a Windows 2003 server running on top of VmWare
client and everything seems to work fine.

I had a problem during the tests where clients were not able to connect
to the server due to the fact that, by mistake, someone fire up a PC with
the same IP of the ZAM server (but this was only noticed on the server
console - since I administer it using RDP I completely missed it).

When workstations are unable to connect to the server, please access the
command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd) on one of the failing workstation
and try issuing the

telnet <zam_server> 7460

If the screen blanks then you have a working connection; if you're stuck
to the "Connecting o <zam_server>" message, then you might have a
networking problem.

Fire up another command prompt (same workstation) and try by issuing the
"netstat -an" command; do you notice any SYN_SENT connection to the server?

Also, do you connect by making use of a fixed IP or a DNS name?

Regedit -> HKLM\SOFTWARE\Tally Systems Corp.\TSCensus\CollectionClient\
HostName

If you have a DNS name, then perhaps something is wrong with your network.

Just some wild guesses,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Actually, your guesses aren't that wild because I've already did some
telnets to the inventory server and sometimes I connect, sometimes I
don't. It's itermittent. I'm suspecting a network issue but I can't put
my finger on it. By the way, I'm using a static IP address (not a DNS
name).

When doing "netstat -an" I do get "SYN_SENT" (when I'm unable to
establish a connection to the server). What does this message mean?...is
this the message returned by default when a connection can't be made?

I guess my next step is to install Ethereal and sniff the network to see
what's going on.

Regards,
Glenn.

Yo Glenn.

Sorry for this delay in getting back to you but I had the flu last week 😞

Usually, during the first phase of a TCP connection, a SYN(chronization)
packet is SENT to the remote host as to see if a connection can be
ESTABLISHED.

If there's a firewall which prevents such connection to occur, you might
have a SYN_SENT condition depicted by netstat.

I think this is not the case of a failing service (eg, destination port
7460 being inactive) since you should have a "connection refused" message.

Are you sure the box you're using as ZAM server is not protected by a
firewall (such as the Windows on or a personal firewall)?

Also, it seems that when ZAM clients are unable to connect to the server,
you could still ping/telnet/RDP/whatever to it so the network connection
seems good.

Good move.

Best,
Rob
