server migration failure

Tried walking through this is a dev environment and it failed. Migrating from ZCM 11.2.3/SLES 11.2 32-bit to ZCM 11.2.3/SLES 11.2 64-bit.

GUI message:

The MIGRATION of ZENworks Server is finished, but some serious errors occurred during the migration. Please see the migration log for details.

1. Backup of rmeote machines :: FAILED
2. Content Copy :: FAILED
3. Restore in remote machine :: FAILED
4. Network identity Migration :: FAILED

From the terminal window:

Error occurred while executing configuration action BackupRemoteLinuxServerAction. Check the novell-zenworks-configure.log file for more details.

I've checked this log file in /var/log/novell/zenworks and it's 0 sized on both servers involved in the migration.

Thoughts?

Can we see that log please. It is not the same as the configure log.

Re: server migration failure

Sorry, which log? There was no mention of another log file/path either in the GUI or script output...

The migration log. There is one, cannot remember the exact name and I
am at home now, but it has "migration" in the name.

Found something potentially relevant in /var/opt/novell/log/zenworks/ZENworks_Server_Migration_14_Oct_2014_13.03.04.log.xml:

I confirmed that I'm not typing in zone admin/server root passwords incorrectly as the GUI prompts if it can't connect.

All servers are properly registered in the zone and message status is all normal.

Re: server migration failure

Let me ask Novell. Does it say what command it tries to execute before
that error?

Re: server migration failure

Thanks Anders!

Last line before the error:

<Message><MessageID><![CDATA[0000]]></MessageID><MessageString><![CDATA[Running ValidateConnectRemoteZenMachineAction to validate connection to remote ZENServ

The log also notes successful identification of the mssql database/availability on port 1433 and SSH authentication for root on the server to be migrated.

Re: server migration failure

OK. I am still waiting for a reply from Novell. If you are in a hurry,
then is opening an incident (SR) and option?

Re: server migration failure

Thanks Anders. I do want to get things going, but I still have other things I can plug away at like getting the new server for migration into my production zone.

Are we talking days or weeks for Novell to respond to you? If you're likely to hear something today/tomorrow, that would excellent! Thanks for looking into the issue.

My contact said that there are no known issues, so check for firewalls
and timesync. The latter is important as you will se authentication
errors if the servers are too far apart in time.

Re: server migration failure

Already did. SUSE firewall is off on both ZCM/SLES servers and time sync diff is 4 seconds or less between the two SLES servers and the DB (external MSSQL). Very strange.

I dug into the setup/migration scripts and found reference to /tmp/err.log, which has some relevant content:

Successfully copied known_hosts file to local machine.

Re: server migration failure

I think that an SR would be the best way forward here.

Re: server migration failure

So I called Novell... recommendation was to skip the migration tool and backup/restore the server as per section 2.2 (Replacing an Existing Primary Server with a New Primary Server). Apparently SLES primaries respond well to this. I like the approach, but it would mean a larger maintenance window than I'd like as I can't stage the new server in advance -- it needs to be built with the same host name and IP.

I am however looking at 2.1 (Replacing the First Primary Server with the Second Primary Server).

Assuming all content is sync'd/migrated between my two primaries (DB is external), the high level concept is largely a move of the CA from SERVER1 (32-bit) to SERVER2 (64-bit). I can then decom SERVER1, upgrade SERVER2 to ZCM 11.3 and build a fresh ZCM 11.3 install on what was the SERVER1 hardware with minimal downtime/somewhat at my leisure. I can even do the new build during business hours, which is handy as I've secured a third server from some other project work.

Thoughts? Reasonable? Problematic?
