Using the OCR tool in redacting documents in TRIM 7.1

Jump to solution

How does the OCR tool works in when creating a new redaction in TRIM?  I see that it is available and when I select it I am able to draw a square around a body of text, but when I select "ok", nothing happens and I am taken back to the original TRIM record from which I was creating a new redaction.

When you 'redact' a record in TRIM, it saves the redacted copy of the image as a rendition.

See if it saved the rendition correctly by going to:

Right-click record > Properties > Renditions tab.

Grundy,

Then what exactly does OCR text selection tool do?

Also, is there a way to put a scanned document, a scanned contract in .tiff format, in TRIM and have its content indexed?

I'm a bit confused about your question.

You're talking about OCR (image to text conversion), but in your opening post you were asking about creating a 'Redaction' (blocking out text in an existing document/cencorship).

Did you mean rendition/revision and not redaction?

Can you be a bit more specific about what tool you are using and what you are trying to achieve?

Sorry,

The opening post misled you.

I know how to redact a document. What I wanted to know is what the OCR text selection tool does.

Step back a little, the reason I ask about the OCR text selection tool is because we heard that TRIM can somehow convert scanned images into indexable records. We scanned a bunch of contract to .tiff files, and currently have no way to search for their contents.

Ok, I see.

OCR is normally mananged by an external/3rd party process before the item reaches TRIM.

TRIM does not have an automatic OCR process.

If you scanned a text document and placed the tiff straight into TRIM, it wont be processed by DCI and wont be searchable.

Normally you would OCR the image at the scanning stage (with the scanner software/hardware doing the OCR), then the OCRed tiff would be registered into TRIM.

Once DCI processes that record, the text will be searchable.

I couldn't actually see the tool you were talking about.

How were you getting to it?

It wasn't in the TRIMViewer when I opened a tiff image.

Here is steps to access OCR text selection tool:

Right-click on a record > New > New Redaction > New Redaction window appears. Select Menu > Tool > OCR text

Everything I know stops there.

Yeah, that tool doesn't do anything and I'm nor sure why it's there.

Might just be an old left-over menu item from some old version of TRIM.

We definitely dont do OCR though, it's always via 3rd party tools.
