Ability to group clients

Since the release of DP8 and its ability to scale to @ 5000 clients per Cell it has been difficult for admins to manage Cells with a large number of clients.  It would be benificial if instead of having a single large list of clients users could have the abiltiy to create groups relevent to their infrastucture/business/application etc. and then add clients to those groups enabling management and patching of clients to be easier.

Hi Chris,

This is a great idea. If the Client management is restructured I also have an important addition.

The Data Protector GUI should also effectively display "virtual hosts", which are commonly used for configuring dedicated backup interfaces on servers or cluster packages. At least assign a different icon to virtual hosts to differentiate them from regular hosts.

In cell_info we have entries such as -host "jepdis10-ob2.godyo.int" -os "gpl x86_64 linux-2.6.xx" -virtual "" -main "jepdis01.godyo.int" -core A.09.00 for virtual hosts.

Sebastian Koehler

I agree - in addition to the above I also think it would be practical to have the ability to tag clients to devices (or tag both clients and devices to  a site) - so that when you have a multi-site cell you can ensure when configuing the backup that you are always backing up the client to the local device and not across your WAN.

It's great idea to use device filter tags to group clients.
