Data Protector - Auto Replication Sync - capacity-based license

0 Votes

Hello,

new idea about  utilization capacity-based license using Auto Replication Sync.

According to the document  «Additional License Authorizations For Data Protection software products” the capacity-based license includes license-to-use (LTU) for Cell Managers and Manager-of-Managers.

Based on the method of calculating the consumed licenses (if it is possible to install several Cell Manager) a copy replicated to another Cell Manager (Auto Replication Sync) should not be taken into account when calculating licenses in the receiver, as it is already accounted for in the source Cell Manager.

Otherwise, this contradicts «The capacity is measured in Front End TB’s or PB’s, meaning the aggregate amount of data source data being backed up from all systems or sources; each system is measured at its largest Full Backup».

In the target Cell Manager we keep backup copy, replied by Auto Replication Sync  technology.

Hi @Ravil_M,

You are correct. You can build multiple Cell Managers with the Capacity-based license and you can also use ARS between them. As of today ARS-replicated data is not counted towards Capacity-based license on the destination Cell Manager. It is excluded from the license report already similar to IDB backup capacity. Only primary backed up capacity is consumed.

Please let us know if this information helps.

Sebastian, hello.

Customer have report from destination Cell Manager that reflects the data about the SAP, but the specifications themselves do not exist, because they are imported.

In this case, we encountered a software bug?

Hello @Ravil_M,

Thanks for sharing. What is the Data Protector version? It should be working okay on more recent 10.x versions. I know that 9.x did not properly report on this. If you're on 10.x collect the four files created from omnidbutil -writedb C:\Temp on the destination Cell Manager and send it to support with the request to investigate. You refer to this discussion. If you're on 9.x consider upgrading soon.

@Ravil_M

I would suggest you check this with support as it looks to be a bug in the licenses calculation. In this case it wouldn't be an enhancement request. Thanks.
