Efficient backup and restore of IBM Spectrum Scale (GPFS)

Brief description:

IBM Spectrum Scale, formerly known as GPFS, is a popular scale-out file system usually storing large amount of data. An efficient way of backing up and restoring GPFS file systems is required for AIX and Linux, because the current implementation of the Disk Agent has only limited scale.

Important features would include:

  • GPFS snapshots support to allow consistent backups (use mmcrsnapshot command)
  • Use the GPFS policies for fast file list creation (use mmapplypolicy command)
  • Support multi-stream backup and restore
  • The backup and restore agent should run on multiple GPFS nodes (scale-out operation)

Benefit:

Fast backup and restore capabilities for very large GPFS file systems.
