Need to back up open files in a Unix, NT, and Novell environment. What is the best method and/or utility?

All answers will be appreciated.

Re: Backing up Open Files

Hi,

backup open files on UNIX is no problem, just the contents is probably not consistent.
On NT and Novell you cannot backup open files.
There is a software which can handle open files called St. Bernard Open File Manager

Re: Backing up Open Files

There are other Open File utilities on the market as well. Be sure and investigate well, because these utilities do use up resources on your system.

You may find a better approach in

1. excluding files from normal backups if they are known in advance to be open - i.e. Exchange, SQL, Oracle, informix, Sybase, email engines....

2. backing up databases periodically with normal filesystem (down) backups, and regularly with HOT backups.

3. conducting backups at low usage times, and kicking your users off of the systems (NT can do this, I suspect your other environments can as well.

4. Changing your architecture to allow mirroring, and splitting the mirrors for uninterrupted backup.

Whatever you do - test your methodology.

Getting a good backups can be a chore. Don't be afraid to look for a good consultant.

Good Luck.
Omniback and NT problems? double check name resolution, DNS/HOSTS...

Re: Backing up Open Files

Nazmal:

Insofar as HP UNIX: fbackup allows (and was designed) to be used while a system is up. It has the ability to retry the copy of active files. The number of retries is configurable. See man fbackup for details.

BTW: I think that I have read something about that HP has licensed OFM and it will be included in OB 3.5

Re: Backing up Open Files

Open files are always backed up on UN*X. Open files are never backed up on NT. Soon the Open File Manager from St. Bernard Software will be supported with OmniBack, which will take care of open files on NT.

Re: Backing up Open Files

St Bernard Open File Manager works very well with Omniback
It's a binary world!
