Backup MSSQL in Windows vCenter on DP 10.8

Jump to solution

We have a vCenter 6.0 on Windows. Back in DP 9.09, we used to be able to backup the vCenter MSSQL database but after the upgrade to 10.8 we no longer able to backup the vCenter MSSQL database. Is it no longer supported? The vCenter is added as vCenter host in DP client (for both 9.09 and 10.8). The client in the Windows vCenter has SQL agent installed. Thanks.

Hello @philiplo,

Well, this depends. There was never support for MSSQL Express, if this is used here. But you can still backup and restore it if the MSSQL instance listens on the network.

While a Data Protector client for Windows can only exist in one Data Protector cell at a time a vCenter import-only can be done to multiple Cell Managers. I guess you have only imported the vCenter to the 10.80 Cell Manager and expect that the regular Data Protector client installed on vCenter also belongs to the new Cell Manager. This is not the case and the MSSQL integration is not listed as a result of this.

You need to export the Data Protector client from the old Cell Manager and import to the new one. Then re-import the vCenter used for VMware backup.

Please keep in mind that vCenter 6.0 is out of general support by VMware and more recent versions of vCenter come as a VCSA with an embedded database.
