DP 8.10 to 10.30 Backout Plan?

Jump to solution

Hi,

We are planning an upgrade of one of our oldest DP servers from 8.10 to 10.30. It's a tiny DP environment, a dozen jobs, with only two servers making up the cell, one Windows cell/installation physical server, one Linux client/installation VM server.

Question I have is what's the preferred method of backup prior to the upgrade to give the easiest backout if required, specifically the Windows physical cell manager? Unlike when we upgraded DP 7 to DP 9 where we found a nice simple RUNBOOK doc which showed backup/backout tasks prior to the upgrade, we've not found anything else we could use.

We have found a copy locally of the original DP 8.10 code (and 8.12 patch), so can reinstall if required as a new install. So our theory for the upgrade/backout would be if 10.30 upgrade fails and leaves DP unavailable:

  • prior to upgrade, run an IDB backup
  • shutdown DP & ensure no outstanding DP processes
  • create local copies of ProgramData\Omniback & Program Files\Omniback
  • perform upgrade, and if it fails...
  • uninstall 10.30
  • reinstall 8.10 & patch
  • recover to IDB backup taken prior to upgrade
  • talk to MicroFocus with the errors during the upgrade

Anything else we need to think about?

Thanks,

Andy

Hi @Andy___H1

That is your choice. I still recommend to follow the upgrade path 8.1x --> 9.00 --> 9.09 --> 10.x

But, if you see that it's a big deal and do not worth it you can try the upgrade directly. This is documented as supported. I am just telling you my experiences.

The backout plan looks good. The only thing I would change is the upgrade path.

Upgrading from DP 8.x to DP 10.x, it's supported, but for my experience newer goes well.

I prefer to do this: 8.x --> 9.00 --> 9.09 --> 10.x

This is more reliable and easier to rollback in case of issues in any of this version. So, after each successful upgrade/patching, take an IDB backup, so you can come back to this point.

Hi Andres,

Thanks for your reply.

The thing in our favour I suppose for a direct upgrade is this DP only has two servers which make up the whole cell, and only 6 filesystem backup jobs. So in terms of complexity and integrations, it has neither, this is practically as close to a native upgrade of an empty DP 8 to DP 10 you could get. Given this info, would you still recommend we go for a staged upgrade of DP 8-9-10?

Thanks,

Andy

Hi Andres,

Thanks for the help and advice, I'd agree with you and your experiences, we'll plan for a multi-stage upgrade. It shouldn't take long to process each upgrade as our IDB is so small, so should get them all done in one day.

Cheers,

Andy
