Re: DP 9,09 error on LSN SQL

Jump to solution

Gracias Jbasilio,

In the virtual machine backup appears:

[Normal] From: OB2BAR_VSSBAR @ clouddpproduccion3 "HyperV" Time: 11/8/2018 2:17:33 AM
Backup Tape of '/ Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer / Virtual Machines / Online \ Coope_03' completed successfully.

Nothing appears in SQL.

Excuse my ignorance, what do you mean by using VEPA? Is not this just for VMware?

Pathes on this node.

Re: DP 9,09 error on LSN SQL

Jump to solution

Thanks Jenni,
Excuse me, my English is not very clear.

I will try to explain to you again
We make a monthly backup with DP of a virtual machine (hyper-v), this machine is Windows and it contains an SQL, the SQL is made a backup that is not by DP (I do not know how they do it, that's what the DBA takes care of) ), the SQL has a sequence of those backups and that sequence is handled by the LSN, when DP does the backup of the virtual machine, it alters the LSN and the DBA reports that when they do the differential (by another method that is not DP) it fails because can not find a full.

So, my problem is, why does the backup of virtual machine affect the LSN inside the SQL?
Again, I clarify that DP does not touch the SQL, we do not have any interaction with SQL integration..

Thanks for your help and I hope it was clear.

Regards.

Hola Eblyn,

You don't see any messages about the inner volume shadow copy within the DP GUI session messages - this is an internal process to hyper-v. If the quiescence fails for any reason then you get an overall message in DP that the snapshot failed to create or if the snapshot was successful it will tell you that. But it doesn;t go into deatils about all the guest vss aware applications that are quiesced.

If you check the guest application event log there you will see the information relating to engaging the sql writer etc.

You won't see this in DP session messages.

regards,
jenni

Re: DP 9,09 error on LSN SQL

Jump to solution

Ok so this is what you need to check with your end user - how are they doing their own sql backups. If they are not using vss to do this then you can disable the sql writer. If they are running a native sql backup (e.g. via SQL management studio) then they do not use the SQL Writer, native sql backup uses SQL Server Virtual Device Interface (VDI) commands (as does data protector via the sql_bar.exe process)

The reason that DP is resetting the log file during the VE Hyper-V backup is because as part of this backup an "inner volume shadow copy" is created. This is created by quiescing all vss-aware applications within the guest - of which SQL is one. You won't ever see messages about this in the VE HyperV backup session messages, they will only be in the guest application event log.

If you disable the SQL writer (which is what VSS uses to quiesce SQL) then the SQL application will remain untouched during the VE HyperV backup.

What I am not entirely sure about is whether the HyperV backup will complain if the sql writer is disabled, but I think not, as I suggested this to a different customer about a year ago to fix a similar issue and he didn't come back to me and say that my workaround broke his hyperV backup.

Speak to your end user and see if he is happy to stop and disable the SQL Writer service. If he is then your issue should be resolved.

jenni

Hola Eblyn

I have been working on that and don't have good news. Here is the statements.

1º Clearly, during a hyperv based backup, the VSS subsystem is called.

During a child partition based backup of the VM (Child parition - VM is online), will call the VSS subsystem on the VM itself.

The problem with this is, VSS will call "ALL" the writers, including the "SQL" writer on the VM (This is a microsoft design issue, something we cannot control)

What happens is the SQL ERR LOG will have entries as follows:

~~2015-07-06 06:31:14.35 Backup Database backed up. Database: master, creation date(time): 2013/09/27(11:11:22), pages dumped: 378, first LSN: 189:290:72, last LSN: 189:320:1, number of dump devices: 1, device information: (FILE=1, TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE

Notice the TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE <----------------------------!!!

2º You can see more info here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2615182/windows-server-backup-may-fail-because-of-the-sql-vss-writer

Cause

When Windows Server Backup attempts to backup a disk volume, a Volume Shadow Copy Snapshot is created for the volume. When the snapshot is created any VSS writer associated with the volume is called. If any of the VSS writers encounter an error, the entire backup job will fail. In this example, the SQL VSS Writer is encountering an error and causing the backup job to fail.

3º Therefore if you try to disable SQL writer HyperV backup will not work, I really believe that there are not more ways in this case, if your customer run HyperV backup LSN will be modified.

Hope this will be useful for you.

Best Regards

Hola Jbasilio,

Thanks for your help and how sad to read this.

I'll wait to see what the DBA says about the backups they do and if it's possible to download the writers,

I will keep you informed as it happens..

Regards

Hola Jenni and Jbasilio
Good news,

The client uses Management Studio for its SQL backups, and agreed to download writeres, we ran a backup of the virtual machine with DP and the LSN was not affected.

Thank you very much for your help and comments.

Regards.
