Data Protector VTL Tape drive locking

Jump to solution

I am using DP 6.0 , 7.0 for backups. While taking the backups, it is locking the virtual tape drives. It means even if the job is using only 3 drives it will lock say suppose 7 drives. As a result the other backup jobs are waiting for the drives.. Is there solution to this or DP works like this while taking the backups??

The selected Devices define which Targets are allowed to be used by the Job at all.

The Balancing minimum defines how much of those have to be free to start the Job.

The Maximum defines how many of them can be used in one Job-Run.

Maybe a example helps:

we have a FileLibrary with 20 Devices and several SAP Archive Backups.

each Backup Job has all 20 Devices selected and Balancing set to 1:1.

So the Job has to use at least one Device, can not use more than one Device but can pick any available Device out of the 20 defined.

Hi,

yes, there is a solution and it's quite simple...

Use only the drives you need to use, especially during BAR backups (SQL, Exchanges, ...) You configure that in tab destination - the default is here 1-5 for load balancing. If you would have configured a concurrency of 5 and you need to backup 5 objects in parallel, the you would use 1-1 instead 1-5.

Best regards

Daniel

Thanks for replying.

Q1- The proposed solution will work even if the VTL is shared ?

Q2- Will there be any impact on running time of backup jobs as the job will not lock drives and will look for additional drives if needed ?

Hi,

A1: yes, it will work. Make sure you set a Lockname for the device (in the properties of the device).

A2: if you calculate it right there will be no impact.

Just to make sure I got your point correctly:

You mean to check mark the load balance option under destination tab and put Minimum and maximum value. Say 1 as min and 3 as maximum. And concurrency 2..then dp would start the 2 backup parallely even if one drive is available...dp would lock this drive for its usage..once this session is over then next 2 parallel backup would start..

q1: what would happen for those backup jobs for which number of tape drive is configured more than what is available at any point in time in the vtl ? Will they wait ?

Concurrency and Load Balancing are two thing. A device can have multiple concurrent streams.

If you set balancing 1:3 the Backup will at least lock one Device from the ones configured in the Specifications.

If none is currently available the Job will wait the Timeout-Period till something becomes free.

Depending on the available devices and the number of Objects to back up it will allocate more than one Device but not more then 3.

Be aware that your Job will fail if you set f.E. Balancing 2:2 and you only have one Device available.

it means minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 drives can be locked by the backup jobs.

q1: what will happen if we have defined 4 target drives for a backup job? Load balancing maximum option will over ride or vice versa ?
