Data Protector ad StoreOnce replication

Hello,

we have Data Protector 9.06 and two new StoreOnce 5100 connected to the Media Server with FC.. We created a Catalyst store on each StoreOnce and configured the two devices on Data Protector using the FC identifier.
The backups use the FC transport. When we configure on DP an object copy from the first catalyst store to the second, if we select the flag "use replication"  we get the error "StoreOnce error: Bad address" when contacting "CATALYST_A1_gw1...".
If we don't select the flag the copy ends correctly. But without this flag the data  are rehydrated on the source Store and deduplicated again on the target store, correct?
Why we can't use replication on FC transport?
If we define the two device on DP using the IP address the flag "use replication" work corectly but the transport used on backup and replica jobs is ethernet 1Gbit and we don't like this.

Thanks you
Massimo

Re: Data Protector ad StoreOnce replication

Hi,

From Deduplication.pdf shipped with DP:

  • For StoreOnce Backup system or Data Domain Boost devices, replication to devices configured with Fiber Channel (FC) is not supported. Target devices must always be configured with IP addresses.

Please reconfigure your target device used for replication.

Re: Data Protector ad StoreOnce replication

DP 9.07 will be able to overcome this, so far you could configure device to use either IP or CoFC, with DP 9.07 you can configure the device with IP address and gateways for it can either use it or FC to write to the store.

So you can have mixture of IP and FC gateways. FC - used for backup to that device and IP gateways for replication

Re: Data Protector ad StoreOnce replication

DP9.07 should solve this however what StoreOnce firmware are you running on the D2Ds ? Might be good to get these upgraded to the latest.

Re: Data Protector ad StoreOnce replication

The StoreOnce 5100 is pretty new and is shipped with StoreOnce OS 3.14.x. The latest release is 3.14.1. All of them support StoreOnce Catalyst over IP and Catalyst over FibreChannel for backup/restore. As of today StoreOnce Catalyst Copy (Replication in Data Protector) requires IP connectivity while replication over FC might be available in the future1.

Sebastian Koehler

1 Replication over FC will require modifcations to StoreOnce OS and Data Protector.
