Direct backup concepts

short question, does server, on which Data Protector Disk and Media agent is installed, is impacted when direct backup is configured?

Servers storage is configured on SAN and tape library also connected on SAN switch. Can you explain direct backup concepts how data is migrating? Is it going through server or directly from SAN to tape library?

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards,

Re: Direct backup concepts

The DA reads the data via SAN connection from disk. It will then write data to tape via SAN attached drives using the MA. If the DA and MA are on the same host, an IPC connection is used to bypass network completely. Only catalog data is send to cell server to store it in IDB.

Direct backup or server free backup was only supported in the past using some special arrays/tape devices. If you have a NAS appliance around (NetApp, EMC, etc.) you could use NDMP to directly transport data from filer to tape. But this is a different approach, but working well.
