Drive LTO-5 FC Dual Port Usage

Jump to solution

Hi,

Please your help with this SAN backup configuration, the scenario is explained in the image attachment, the objective is configure a SAN Backup for the AIX Client installing a DA and MA and  presenting the LTO drive to the SO.

Can we use the LTO 5 Fibre Channel drive - port B (the drive is dual port) to configure a zone on the SAN 2? (view the attachment)

Thank you and regards

Rafael

Hello @Rafael-Antonio,

Data Protector itself supports this configuration either as a Mutli-Path device, where you configure one path per Media Agent to the same device, OR by creating the same drive twice with different names (use the same device lock name) so that Data Protector is aware that it is in fact the same device. Keep in mind, you can only actively use path A or path B at the same time.

More important is the question if the tape library and the device supports using the 2nd port. This might be a licensed feature on the tape library.

OK thank you @Sebastian.Koehler for your quick response.

"You can only actively use path A or path B at the same time.", yes, the backup tasks will run in sequential mode, since we only have one drive, but the flow of data is what interests us, the objective is for them to flow through SAN.

I will review the library drive license as you recommended, but independent of this, the indicated configuration should work.

Hi @Rafael-Antonio,

As said, we're very capable of SAN device sharing with Data Protector. If the tape library does not disable the 2nd port (due to licensing restrictions) you can use it for the scenario.

It is not needed to install any device specific (failover) drivers. To test it, plug the 2nd port in and zone it to a server. If a device shows up, you are ready to go.
