Email with attached session log if a backup session fails

Jump to solution

Hi,

with the notifications you are able to send an email if a session fails or finished with a status <> completed without errors and warnings. This is working fine for me.

But it would be helpful to be able to attach the session report of the failing session to this email.

Will this be possible with any newer version of data protector  or do I need to script manually a solution for this ?

Thanks,
Daniel.

Notifications may export additional data into environment (e.g. SESSIONID) prior to calling your script. You can utilize that to augment your reporting script.

Hi Daniel,

closest to such functionality is single sessions report used insend method - use report group, but it only gives you messages other than normal, so it might not catch all scenarios.

Such functionalite could be requested with enhancement request case describing which notification exactly you would need

best regards,

Dimitar

Hi Daniel. We are running Data Protector 9 with bundle 905.

In the notifications we have when the backup finishes, all the data we get is the statitcs, but not all the log from the session.

I think you mught have to make a script for getting all the messages from the session.

About what Dimitar says, I did not ask for an enhancement never, so I don't know about that one.

Regards.

Use a Notification to trigger an external Script.

That way you can f.E. run omnirpt-Commands, pack together all relevant Reports created by that and forward them via Mail

Thanks for all your feedback.

I have tried to do this with notifications and external scripts like omnirpt. Thereby unfortunately the reports are not session specific.

If the notification would be able to submit the session-id of the session that triggers it, it would be easy to script this with external commands like  omnirpt  or  omnidb -session %session-id% -report

The only way I know to achive this is to add an post-exec script to all backup specifications which just writes its session-id into an file onto the cell manager. After that it is no problem to manage the email notification with data protector notification or an external script.

But this solution means that every backup session has to get this post-exec and this is not feasible ...

Created a Notification that is triggered each time a Session completes and set it to Execute Script "test" with content "cat | grep "Session ID" >> /tmp/test.out".

Result is a new Line in that File each time a Session completes, containing the SessionID.

Instead of writingthat info just to a Log you can use if further to get the desired Infos.

Kudos to that, Env-Variables sent to the Script by the Notification have everything to continue and way more.

something like:

BACKUPGROUP=Drivetest
BACKUPTYPE=0
DATALIST=Drivetest_LTO3_1901
EVENTOBJECT=Drivetest_LTO3_1901
NUMBACKUPERRORS=0
SESSIONID=2016/02/25-32
SESSIONLIST=NONE
SESSIONSTATUS=Completed
SESSIONSTATUSNUM=0
SESSIONSUBTYPE=0
SESSIONTYPE=0
SEVERITY=Normal

If this does not get you what you are looking for take a look at our Backup Navigator reporting tool.  It will provide you with advance reporting including the report you are looking or as well as the ability to create customer reports.  It also provides analytic data about your backup environment.

Is there a Version of BackupNavigator that has everything bundled already or is it still required to set up DB-Server and co manually?

It now has  a script that if the server has internet connection the script will automaticlly download all the packages that you will need, makes life much simpler.
