HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

Just installed the 60-day evaluation of HP Navigator, but I am getting an error when it runs the data collection:

Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxxx-dp' error occurred.

I have HP Navigator (v9.20) running under RedHat linux v6.5 in a VM against DP v7.03 CM running on Windows.

I have stopped the firewall (service iptables stop) to see if it's a firewall issue, but it still fails.

I have added the HP NAVIGATOR IP address to the HOSTS file on the DP cell as the VM isn't in DNS as yet.

Both servers can ping each other, and some reports seem to complete successfully.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I have attached the agent_util_cmd..log logfile, but obsucrred the server name(s).

Thanks.

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

Hey CBers,

name resolution is key. Add the VM to DNS and check again. The CM must be able to send data to the BN host. In case you call support make sure you use either RHEL 6.4 or 6.6. Version 6.5 is not supported for Backup Navigator 9.20.  Can't find the agent_util_cmd.log attached. Without the file it is hard to say what is wrong.

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

Thanks Sebastian.

I was told that RedHat 6.5 was supported 😞

So looks like I'll have to install 6.6 then.

HP don't really want to know as it as an evaluation installation rather than a paid-for install.

I have attached the log file this time 🙂

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

The installation is straight forward. According to the logs name resolution might fail in one of the directions. Once the system has been reinstalled and registered in DNS try the following from backup navigator host and cell manager before adding CM to Navigator.

nslookup <bn_hostname>
nslookup <bn_ip>
nslookup <cm_hostname>
nslookup <cm_ip>

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

The server has now been added to DNS and both the BN server and the CM server can see each other.

I'll install RH6.5 as soon as I can and then install BN again, although I did get this from HP:

Note: only Backup Navigator 9.20 supports Red Hat 6.4, 6.5 and 6.6

BN 9.00 and 9.10 support only Red Hat 6.4 and 6.5.

Thanks for your help so far.

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

That's intresting. According to the support matrix for 9.20 this is not true.

Operating System

HP Backup Navigator 9.20 runs on the following operating systems:

• Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4/6.6 operating system (Basic Server installation type)

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

HP Backup Navigator  works on Red Hat EL 6.5 that is not the issue here.

Check if collection works now, there is also trubleshooting guide in user guide for the application.

If it still doesn't work please provide the logs.

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

Sure it will, but it is not supported. If we're not able to help here, he will be happy to be at the correct version before calling support.

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

I have now installed RedHat 6.6, so at least now on a supported OS.

I have added 3 DP cells into HPNAV, 2x 7.03 CM and 1x 9.03 CM.

Still have the same issues, although some things work, ie they get added to the database, but still get the errors, mainly IPC.

Example:

Device added to BackupSpecification Information hpbn 19/08/15 13:22 Device 'PKH-MSL-DRIVE1' added to backup specification 'End of Month Copy Job' in cell 'cell_server-1'.

I have attached an new log file for reference.

It's difficult to raise a call with HP as this is an evaluation, so they don't support you, but keep referring you back to your resller.

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

Hi

From logs checked there are multiple issues reported:

- network connectivity BN-CM issues (firewall, dns)

-IPC problems (internal issues on CM - check cm debug logs)

I attached a tool to check network conectivity from Backup Navigator to Cell Managers.

Tool usage:

put it on the Backup Navigators host

java –jar RemoteTool.jar <cm-fqdn-hostname.com>

You should get the response written out in your console (query succeeded or failed).

We will work on from the results you get and resolve the issues.

Regards.

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

In the "HP Backup Navigator User's guide", it says to do the following:

Data Protector environment

  • To enable data collection for the Cell Manager Services, IDB Health, and Licenses related reports from the UNIX and Linux Cell Managers, create the following softlinks on such Cell Managers:

ln –s /opt/omni/sbin/omnisv /opt/omni/lbin/omnisv
ln –s /opt/omni/sbin/omnidbcheck /opt/omni/lbin/omnidbcheck
ln –s /opt/omni/bin/omnicc /opt/omni/lbin/omnicc
ln –s /opt/omni/bin/omnidb /opt/omni/lbin/omnidb
ln –s /opt/omni/bin/omnimm /opt/omni/lbin/omnimm
ln –s /opt/omni/bin/omnicellinfo /opt/omni/lbin/omnicellinfo

The ln (link) is a unix command, so does anything need to be done like this in Windows ??

Re: HP Navigator: Data collection for cell 'cell_xxxxx' error occurred.

Hi,

I believe those entries are needed only for Unix cell server

Do you have OB2PORTRANGE specified for Data Protector cell server?

From the backup navigator server run the following and let us know if its returning the media information

/opt/agent/util_cmd -query FUN_LISTDEVICES -1 -server <cell server name>

Also if the cell server has encryption enabled then you need to add the backup navigator server in the exclusion list

OB2PORTRANGE is enabled in the .omnirc file on the cell manager.

We don't use encryption on the CMs, so I shouldn't have to do anything should I ??
