How to configure complex Schedules with HPE Data Protector 10.0x ?

Hi Folks,

we would like to upgrade to Data Protector 10.0x but we are in some troubles with our specific customer-schedules.

So, the Web-based combined scheduler is cute but is ther any chance to build such schedules as followed?

-full -protection -days 96
-every
-day 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 -month
-at 23:00

-full -protection -days 96
-exclude
-day Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Sat
-at 23:00

-incr 1 -protection -days 67
-every

In DP 909 we solved it by using the scheduler files in OmniBack/config/server/barschedule and ../schedule but in DP 10.0x this isn´t possible obvious...

Can someone help us in this case?

Apologies for the late one Markus as I have been off  for the past days/weeks from work.

I've simulated your schedule on my test DP 10.03 CM and here is a summary.

Looking at your requirements:

- FULL Backup every 15th to 21st only if these days are fridays
- INCR1 every Friday from 1st to 14th and 22nd to 31st
- INCR2 every Day except Friday

I can see the above to be:

- FULL BACKUP every 3rd FRIDAY of the month
- INCR1 BACKUP every 1st, 2nd and 4th FRIDAY of the month
- INCR2 BACKUP Daily except FRIDAY

and so a total of 5 schedules will be created.

FULL BACKUP - occurs every 3rd Friday of the month

INCR1 BACKUP - occurs every 1st Friday of the month
INCR1 BACKUP - occurs every 2nd Friday of the month
INCR1 BACKUP - occurs every 4th Friday of the month

INCR2 BACKUP - occurs everyday (SUN/MON/TUE/WED/THURS/SAT) - except Friday

Let me know your comments and if you confirm the above, I will share you the screenshot for the web-based scheduler on how I have defined the above/each schedules.

I have exactly the same problem. It could be an show-stopper for me. To make the bad decision for eleminating the old scheduler more consistent, developers have not imlemented some CLI commands to modify the schedule. Only clickie-clickie is not very helpful for me.

This is also one of my concerns as I'm also manually editing schedule files for more complex schedules. I hope there's a solution before 9.xx becomes unsupported!

We are facing the same problem, all our schedules were migrated without respect to all the "-exclude" patterns. So they are scheduled for every day. Deleting such a schedule takes about 5 minutes.

Hi all,

Since the Consolidated Scheduler in 10.02 does not support the -exclude option we need to re-create the complex schedules. I found out that there is a solution in 10.02 for most of the cases that can help.

Create complex Schedules:

  1. Schedule the less frequent backup/copy/report (e.g. last Sunday in month full at 20:00)
  2. Schedule the daily or frequently running backup/copy/report, must be the same spec (e.g. daily incremental at 20:00)
  3. Before saving the more frequent schedule you see an active conflict. Select Fill free slots
  4. The result is that all non-conflict slots are filled with the frequently slots. Conflicts are avoided.

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for this information. But what about if i have different backup specs? This is not working. Let's say : i have a backup spec for daily and weekly (2 schedules here, because i want different protection for weekly), one backup spec for monthly and one backup spec for yearly.

Why do i want this? Because this can be controlled more easily:

- backup is done on one 1st SO;

- all the data is replicated to another 2nd SO;

- from the second SO i want to offload data to tape (only from montlhy and yearly specs)

So if i want to avoid overlapping using 3 backups specs, how can i achieve this?

Another thing, can i create one schedule and use it for more backup specs?

Hello @bmihai,

I found a way to create complex Schedules with different backup specs. I use an example where I schedule a monthly Object Copy COPY_MONTHLY on the last Sunday at 08:00 AM and a weekly Object Copy COPY_WEEKLY every Sunday at 08:00 AM with the exeception of the last Sunday.

Create complex Schedules with two different specs:

  1. Schedule COPY_MONTHLY (e.g. last Sunday every month at 08:00 AM, name the schedule COPY_MONTHLY)
  2. Schedule COPY_WEEKLY (e.g. last Sunday every month at 08:00 AM, make sure to disable the Schedule Enabled control, name the schedule COPY_WEEKLY-exclude). Use the Clone Schedule checkbox to quickly duplicate this schedule for the next step.
  3. Schedule COPY_WEEKLY again (e.g. Sunday every week at 08:00 AM, make sure to enable the Schedule Enabled control, name the schedule COPY_WEEKLY)
  4. Before saving the last schedule you see an active conflict. Select Fill free slots
  5. The result is that all non-conflict slots are filled with the frequently slots. Conflicts are avoided, even with disabled schedules.

Hi Sebastian,

I didn't had the time to check this. Btw, ihave DP 10.02. I din't updated yet to 10.03 since i have an issue with the Installation server. I already configured monthly backup jobs to not overlap like this:

- daily backup spec - weekly on Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun

- weekly backup spec - 2nd Tue of every month (1st schedule); 3rd Tue of every month (2nd schedule), 4th Tue of every month(3rd schedule), Last Tue of every month (4th schedule, +Fill free slots)

- monthly backup spec - 1st Tue of every month.

No solution yet for yearly backup spec.

PS: Btw, regarding a Linux IS, do you know if i need to manually import IS certificate on each client + manually import clients certificate on IS server? I already did this on clients (added manually CM certificate) + CM (added manually clients certificates), because otherwise i couldn't import clients in CM.

Let me try to comment on your post.

First item - there are major wnew features added in Data Protector 10.03 - you can use CLI to manage your backup schedules.

Scheduler improvements

The following new omnidbutil options are added:
o The option -export_schedules exports schedules.
o The option -import_schedules imports schedules.
o The option -create_schedule creates schedules.
o The option -list_schedules lists all the schedules.
o The option -modify_schedule modifies schedules.
o The option -delete_schedule delete schedules.

I will let you decide when you can upgrade to 10.03.

Looking at your query - schedules for your backup

-full -protection -days 96

-incr 1 -protection -days 67
-incr 2 -protection -days 60

I can see five schedules (2 full and 3 incremental) but trying to understand what you need

11pm FULL BACKUP every 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 & 21 of the month
11pm FULL BACKUP Weekly backup (every friday)

11pm INCR 1 BACKUP Daily backup (except 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st of the month.

11pm INCR 1 BACKUP Weekly backup (every friday) - ????????

Can you clarify / lists down WHEN exactly you need to run your FULL and INCR backup, and then I can advise how to define it in your schedules. I need to be clear before I make a commment.

In my example i´ve 2 incr1 backup-schedules with one exclude.

The idea is to get a incr1 backup, every friday in month (except day 15 - 21, on these days are the full backups scheduled)

You run this spec daily as Incr2 with the exception of Fridays. On Friday you run Incr1 or on the 3rd Friday a Full. This should be possible with three Schedules on one backup spec (see my earlier post). I think three Schedules are enought.

My question was because I see that the INCR1 running on weekly (Friday) is in conflict with the weekly (Friday) FULL backup.

This is why I was hoping you can place in specific statements your requirements.

1. Full backup running every ???? per month.

2. Incr Backup running every ???? per month.

Let me know and then let me simulate on my TEST CM.
