Object Operations for SAP Hana

Jump to solution

I wanted to confirm on the Object Operations of backups of the SAP HANA databases.

Is Object Copy of the database backup to a device like tape supported by Data Protector.

That is primary copy to a disk storage and then an Object Copy to tape.

In my understanding, SAP Studio will not be aware of this secondary copy to tape created by Data Protector and hence a restore of the same if the primary copy is not available will not be possible.

Hence, the only way to have copies to tape would be to create separate backup specifications which point to the tape devices.

However if the same is possible, what are the things that need to be talen care of.

Hi @Daryl_G,

This is correct, the HANA database (same applies for Oracle, Sybase, etc) is not aware of any duplication activities happening inside of Data Protector. Duplication can be Object Copy, Media Copy or Replication. The good thing is that the whole media management is done by Data Protector and is fully transparent to application backed up. Each copy of an object is associated with a priority based on Media location. In other words, if there is a restore request from HANA Data Protector will choose the highest priority media where the requested object resides and restore from it. If the media is unavailable or expired a lower priority media is selected. You can also overwrite Media priority by assigning a Location with a higher priority to a specific media.

In summary, object copies are fully supported with any kind of backup data.
