Object protection prevents usage of a whole medium
Hi,
We use Data Protector 8 to make backups on tape. The pool consists of 40 mediums. All the backup specifications have protection time defined. Sometimes, when a medium is full we see that it contains one or several objects which are still have to be protected for some time but all the other objects are expired.
As a result, a 1.5 TB medium containing one 100 MB protected object with all other objects expired cannot be used for other backups until that one object is also expired. What can be done in this situation? Maybe there are some best practices about it?
Thank you.

I think in this situation you need to use Object conslidation and consolidate the objects on the tapes to another tape and thus free up the tape with several objects dotted throughout that are still protected.

Alternatively you could simply do an object copy and recycle the source on completion.
To prevent this situation arising in the future try to make sure that all backups on the pool have the same retention policy.
