Question: DP6.0 Copy Media or Copy by Object?

Hi,

At a customer we use DP6.00 to backup to a VLS (Virtual Lib, with same tape settings as the MSL) and then copy the backup sessions to the MSL tapes.

All the data on all the VLS tapes must be copied to the MSL.

Is is better to perform a 'Object Copy' - the sessions-, or go for the Media Copy?

And is there a why?

Object copy is generally more flexible, and it is treated as a separate backup job.

Media copy might perform better, however.

For an "everything must be copied" situation it is probaby a wash.

We are doing exactly the same (everything from VLS to MSL). We are using Object copy. You can be more selective on the objects then with the medias. Our Objects stay on the VLS for 5 days. The copy jobs takes everything with number of copies < 1.
Beside this: We had cases where a media copy was ok. The object copy of the same data failed. The data was actually corrupt. Media copy does not interpret it. In this case the Object copy is also a test that your backup is ok.

the cu need to copy from VSL to MSL.

both LTO2 tape.

Object copy is much more efficient, since you can copy the required objects from source to destination. Media copy requires the same media type on source and destination.
