Restore single files from a VHD Hyper-V Cluster Backup using pathed DP 6.20
Hi,
I have backed up our virtual machines we have in a hyperv cluster.
2 qustions.
1: Is there any way HP Dataprotector can take diff. or incr. of the VHD file (virtual machine) like an incremental forever ?
2: And is there any possibillities with Data Protector now or will be in the future to Restore single files from a VHD backup without restoreing the whole machine and the mount the VHD file ?

2: And is there any possibillities with Data Protector now or will be in the future to Restore single files from a VHD backup without restoreing the whole machine and the mount the VHD file ?
Yes, with Granular Recovery agent, but you need licenses.
You call to support and request to temporal licenses in order to test the product.

Hi Ebyln,
Right now there is nothing available granular restore wise for Microsoft HyperV machines. The VM will have to be restored in order to get into the VM's filesystem.
Regards,

Hi Stephen,
Yes you are right.
My mistake , only works for vmware and sharepoint, not for Hiper-v.
Thanks for the clarification

It should be added that the nature of GR extensions is generally to paper over the fact that technically, you cannot avoid to restore a large object to some intermediate space and then extract the targeted content from that intermediate restore, when the technology is designed that way (like IS backups in Exchange requiring restore to a RSG, or arbitrary disk images pulled from some virtualization environment needing something that groks the container format, can interpret the partitioning of these disks and mount the file systems lurking there). GRE will make the process more user friendly and less dangerous, may allow the backup administrator to delegate more of the process to the DBA/Exchange Admin/Virtualization Admin in question, but it cannot avoid restoring the entire object before it can access its content.
HTH,
Andre.

If it were a Filesystem backup, you could could use Advanced Incremental (after doing at least one full Backup), and, periodically combine a number of Incrementals into a Synthetic full. I checked the Hyper-V documentation, and found nothing that indicates that this is an option

There is functionality for VMware Granular Recovery EXtension, but thsi is only for VMware. We had a training class this morning where your question was asked, there are no plans at the current time to implement GRE for Hyper-V, and, I seem to recall that thsi is a Windows limitation
You can always request an Enhancement for Data Protector from this site:
