Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

TThe exchange server is installed over windows 2012 R2. The exchange backup is failing with the message

Cannot unload exchanger medium (Details unknown.)

History:

We have upgraded from DP 8.1 to DP 10.03. While migrating Server hostname also needed to be changed as there was error in upgrading to DP 10.03 with the prevailing hostname. The system was released for further use after DP team corrected settings and resolved errors.

Apart from Exchange we are also taking file system backup from HP unix which is working fine. Agents on all the servers are updated to 10.03.

The DP team has checked the system and reported no issues at their end. The ticket was forwarded to hardware team which has also given go ahead for the same. However, the error still persists.

Looking for further help and ideas.

This is a typcial hardware and/or driver related issue and the hardware team should be able to help. This can be caused by a faulty drive, medium or an agent causing issues due to device polling.

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

The hardware team has checked the hardware. Drive firmwares and host drivers are up to date. They do not observe any polling isues or any HW related issues at their end. We have also used tried using a new HP LTO tapes just to be sure.

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

Hello DC_Admin,

Does this happen with regular file system backups, small amount of data and only one this particular drive? You can try to enable SCSI Reserve Release on the drive.

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

This happens while taking MS Exchange 2010+ server backup. The error occurs when data size reaches approx. around 800GB. The issue isn't tape drive specific on the Tape library, we have tried the same on other Tape drives in the tape library with result being the same.

After failure the tape drive gets disabled, the tape condition downgrades to poor. To re - use the tape we need to re - format the tape.

SCSI Reserve Release on the drive is enabled.

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

Hi @DC Admin,

The only issue I can think of would a tape spanning issue, but 800GB fits on LTO6 media or do you see any early unload/load messages on the drive during the backup? When did this started? Is the backup speed okay?

Can you share the drive configuration (omnidownload -device DeviceName), debug log and omnirc on the BMA host (sr---)? I would love to see the full session report.

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

We do not see any early unload/load messages. It started after migration to DP 10.03 from DP 8.1.  Unable to attach logs to the forum though

Hi

At 100% this is a hardware issue, you said that hardware team has checked tape drive, could you please share LTT support ticket collected?

Best Regards

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

We have already escalated the issue to HP tape hardware team and DP team.  The error only comes after data has been completely loaded into the tape drive.

The tape backend team is checking the time stamps of the error as recorded in the DP and the timestamp as shown in the hardware logs.

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

Update: In our setup the tape drive is connected to our Hyper V virtual machine over SAN fibre through vSAN and MPIO. When backup occurs while choosing Hyper V VM multipath the following error

[Major] From: BMA@srbda---- "HP:Ultrium 6-SCSI_4"  Time: ---

[90:180]    Cannot rewind medium. ([1117] The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. )

[Major] From: BMA@srbda----- "HP:Ultrium 6-SCSI_4"  Time: ----

[90:135]    Cannot eject medium. ([1117] The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. )

Backup works fine when choosing Hyper V host as multipath. Is backup over Hyper V host not fully supported by DP.

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

Hello,

I think as long as the hardware vendor does not fully support this, the backup ISV won't be able to do anything. But according to the table Virtual Machine connectivity to Tape (StoreEver) backup targets in http://www.hpe.com/storage/daprcompatibility it should work with the latest firmware and drivers. This is new to me.

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

Hi @DC Admin,

The content does not help. I don't expect this change has a high priority. Most customers use StoreOnce or DataDomain with source-side deduplication which is highly efficient for VM backups. What is the use case for tape backup inside the VM (including the Media Agent)?

Re: Unable to take Exchange backup in DP 10.03

We have Exchange server hosted on a Hyper - V VM (Windows Server 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013). As the database is large (> 3 TB) so for efficient and reduced backup time, we were attempting to take backup to tape via SAN. We can see tape drive in VM device manager. We also observe fast backup times however the backup fails at the end.

DP team blames the error on combination of OS, Hyper - V and hardware as they only interface with the OS.
