VSS Snapshots (from FS Backup) and exchange performance problems

 Hello,

we have about 20 Exchange Servers in a DAG Group backuped up via the MS Exchange2010+ Integration.

We also run daily FS backups (only C: Drive) of the single member servers including configuration.
All the Exchange Database stuff is on the D drive which we excluded from the backup.

But if the CONFIGURATION Backup starts, anyone having his Mbox on the particular server will have extrem performance problems in Outlook. The backup starts a lot of VSS writers:

VSS Writer 'Task Scheduler Writer':Component 'TasksStore' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'VSS Metadata Store Writer':Component 'WriterMetadataStore' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'Performance Counters Writer':Component 'PerformanceCounters' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'System Writer':Component 'System Files' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'System Writer':Component 'Win32 Services Files' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'ASR Writer':Component 'BCD' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'SqlServerWriter':Component 'master' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'SqlServerWriter':Component 'model' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'SqlServerWriter':Component 'msdb' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'SqlServerWriter':Component 'SecurityForExchange' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'Registry Writer':Component 'Registry' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'COM+ REGDB Writer':Component 'COM+ REGDB' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'IIS Config Writer':Component 'IISCONFIG' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'MSMQ Writer (MSMQ)':Component 'sysq' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'MSMQ Writer (MSMQ)':Component 'registry' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'MSMQ Writer (MSMQ)':Component 'mapping' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'MSMQ Writer (MSMQ)':Component 'queue' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'Cluster Database':Component 'Cluster Database' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'WMI Writer':Component 'WMI' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS Writer 'IIS Metabase Writer':Component 'IISMETABASE' successfully added in the snapshot.
VSS option was specified. Attempting to create snapshot.
Storing additional VSS writer data into the Recovery Set archive.

And also does a bunch of other VSS related stuff:

Storing ASR/BCD configuration data into the Recovery Set archive.
Storing network support files into the Recovery Set archive.
Storing driver installations into the Recovery Set archive.
        Verifying/Storing system partitions.
Storing Recovery Info data into the Recovery Set archive.
Storing hardware info into the Recovery Set archive.
Storing network info into the Recovery Set archive.
Storing phase 0 log file into the Recovery Set archive.

I'm not an exchange nor windows admin, can anyone of the windows experts see somethng which could lead to issues with exchange performance?

Hi @sofromt

I think your question will have a better answer using the MS Exchange forum instead of here. They will know about possible VSS writers used for Exchange that can cause this performance issue.

From DP, you can try to disable the option Use Shadow Copy, so the writers will not be used.

This has some cons: as no snapshots are created, if a file is being used cannot be backed up.
