restore of AllwaysOn MS SQL Database in same instance

Hi everyone,

we are still testing 10.40 (PoC before rolling out). Unfortunately we encounter problems again and again. Current:

restore of DAG MS SQL Database under different name in the same instance. Under 9.x no problem, under 10.40 this is denied. To enable restores of single tables / information you have to maintain a separate instance / server for the restore now (user permissions, connect etc). This complicates the handling enormously.

Before 10.x, the database could simply be restored under a new name in parallel of the still existing original database in the same context / instance and the users could then export the data they had access to from that temporary database.

Or is there a trick to accomplish this without an instance of it's own?

Best regards

Frank

Hello,

If I am not understanding wrong, the configuration you want is not possible.

Note this note in the documentation:

Spoiler
Important In an availability group configuration, restoring a database to a different location is mandatory. However, the database can be restored with the same name, if it does not belong to any availability group.

Re: restore of AllwaysOn MS SQL Database in same instance

Hi Andres,

yes, I know this way is not officially supported. But my problem is, my (big) customer used it intensively under 9.x and without any problems. He has also often done this with MS SQL on-board resources.
The database will be renamed and the filelocation will be changed.
He doesn't understand why DP now prohibits this expizit and says that he can't use DP 10.x any more and is looking for another backup software or simply makes backups vi MS SQL to a share.

Best regards

Frank

Unfortunately, from us as support, we cannot do anything that is outside the supported. And in case that this work is not supported if an error occurred.

You will need to see if someone could test this and let you know if is possible.

The best idea here is to add an idea to request this kind of restores:
