Virtualizing Scratch - Catastrophic Failure error

I'm trying to virtualize a program called Scratch Scratch | Home | imagine, program, share. As an installed program, it runs fine. But when I virtualize it, I get this error message :

The application has encountered an error : Catastrophic failure

(0x8000FFFF)

Additional information:

ERROR: 0x8000FFFF, Unexpected path:: \

ERROR: 0x8000FFFF, In call: _folderMapper.MakeNtPath(_strCurrentDirectory,sNtCurrentDirectory)

ERROR: 0x8000FFFF, In call: _PrepareProcessEnvironment()

ERROR: 0x8000FFFF, In call: g_vm.EssentialInit(hEntry,hBootstrapFileMapping, cbFileSize, cbOffsetPayload, pbProcessBlock, pbApplicationBlock)

I am using a clean install of Windows XP in a Sun Virtual Box virtual machine. I can virtualize it using ThinApp, but since we do not have a license I can only do so with an evaluation version.

Can anyone shed any light on what I could try?

Have you tried disabling "Quick Snapshot?"

Yup, tried it. Didn't work. I got the same exact error as listed above.

I don't get it, Scratch is so simple. A few .gif files, an .exe or two, and that's about it. What could be messing this up so bad? Office virtualizes so easily, Adobe InDesign as well, but not Scratch.

Any help will be appreciated.

I have it run as virtual app perfectly.

Have a look at the multiple startup files. I noticed that the
capture process missed a startup (starting a web url page, so
that the first multiple start row is empty and set to Auto Start.
I think this empty row with auto start caused virtual app to call
null file. Try to run it with trigger Scratch. Or remove the empty
multiple startup file row and re-build.

Hope it helps.

Good to know someone got it to work.

I doubt that's the cause. I am pretty faithful in checking the startup files and putting the right one for autostart.

What kind of setup are you using? Virtual Machine? What OS? You are doing something different that I am not.

For the scratch, I use ZAV 7.2 on XP Pro Sp3 running
on VMware Workstation.

Huh, the only difference there, I think, is that I'm using Virtual Box insteald of VMWare.

Apparently, I used XP SP 2 when creating the VM. I thought this might be the cause of the problem; so, I updated and it still didn't work.

I've tried quick snapshots, long snapshots, I've had it auto-detect associated runtimes and not. Nothing is working.

I find it hard to believe the VM program, being the only difference, is the root cause of this. But, I'll try making this virtual app on a real machine or something.

We haven't had any issues with our virtualized copy. I use a base XP SP3 install with no patches under VMware workstation. I just checked the xappl file and it was built with ZAV 7.0.140 if that's any help.

I have been reading your posts and I also am having alot of problems getting Open Office 3.2.1 to virtualize. I am a newbie and have not found any help on this one yet. I am trying to get the file extensions so that we can use MS office and Open Office. I am using XP Pro Spk 3 ZAV 8. Any help would be appreciated, any steps to follow as well.
Please some one help this newbie with some simple steps.

thank you!

I have seen this error once so far.

The way I solved it was to enable exe optimization, which changes the run path to "current directory".

You could try and mess with the "run from" options in settings...
