UI Changes in Dimensions 14.2
14.2 release brings changes in UI to refresh and modernize desktop client look. Multiple places were changed: main views, navigation panels, dialogs and toolbars.
One of the most used views is probably Folders and Items. In 14.2 the view has flat and Zen look – there are no borders with 3D edges, the grid and its header are flat and have thin one pixel separators, new icons were designed for folder and item and other control elements on the view.
Context panel at the top of the main view was redesigned and transformed into context toolbar. It shows important settings for stream or project, but now takes less space, and its position on screen can be customized to user needs.
Work area browser view implements the same principles or reducing visual clutter and helping to concentrate on the content – making borders thin and lightweight, removing unnecessary control elements, updating icons. Displaying overlay icons for moves and renames is a nice enhancement introduced in 14.2 release.
Navigation panels include several enhancements to allow more layout customizations. Smart docking mode displays a preview of where a panel will be docked and enables you to position navigation panels inside a tabbed view. To adjust the layout click on panel title and drag it to the new position.
In the Auto Hide mode panels are not visible but slide in when you mouse over a docked panel. To toggle Auto Hide mode click the pin button on a panel’s title bar.
The Console panel has a new look.
In the desktop client, and the Visual Studio, Eclipse and Windows Explorer integrations, it is now easier to find and select streams and projects. Recent streams and projects are tracked automatically as user works with Dimensions for example creates a new stream or opens it. Favorites are defined by user and available in the new stream/project selector.
New stream and project selector control is a major improvement in usability of finding/selecting of a stream or project. It displays the list of available streams or projects with full text search, filtering, support for recent and favorite streams and projects. Start typing the ID of a stream (or project). Streams that contain those characters are displayed.
The login dialog can be displayed in short and extended layouts.
Updated message dialogs for tasks that require decision making.
I encourage you to try the updated client and check out all the enhancements.
