How does the verification error – “Error 8241 - Variable is more than 30 symbols”, affect analysis of programs?

How does the verification error – “Error 8241 - Variable is more than 30 symbols”, affect analysis of programs?

Problem :

During verification, an error “Error - 8241 - Variable is more than 30 symbols” is displayed for variables with names longer than 30 characters.

How does this affect analysis of the program containing it?

Resolution:

This “error” will have no affect on the analysis of the program containing it.

This error can be ignored as the remainder of the analysis will be completed.

There is a way to control the level of this or any other message produced during verification.

To do this, copy the attached legacy.xml file and place it in the top level directory of the workspace.

3324.legacy.xml

NOTE : The attached example legacy.xml file will only affect programs verified with dialect set to COBOL390.

This file will be “appended” to the product installation Legacy.xml file at run time to change the message level to “warning”.

NOTE : By using legacy.xml at workspace level, this message level change will only be used for the workspace, not for all workspaces.  These changes are not overwritten by installation of fixes or re-installation of product.

If these changes are made to the product installation Legacy.xml file, be aware that any changes made to this file will be overwritten by installation of product fixes or product re-install.
