[archive] File access speed on RedHat ES4

[Migrated content. Thread originally posted on 26 September 2007]

We have installed a new RedHat Linux server in a local gigabit network using Samba to provide network services for the Windows PCs. Copying files between server and PCs works very fast, but when it comes to accessing Vision files on the server from AcuCobol applications on the PCs, it is very slow.

Earlier we used Mandrake Linux and this was much faster on a 100Mbit network. So, we wonder if anyone knows how to speed up access on a RedHat.

The PCs are running Windows Vista Business, but we also tried Windows XP with aqually results.
