[archive] word templates

I created a word template (.dot) with text form fields. I can open this is file in cobol and populate the fields by name. I then do a saveas and name the new file (.doc). If I reopen this file in cobol
I no longed have the field names available. My question: Is there a way to carry these field names to the new document?
