The Cloud over the Cloud

The Cloud over the Cloud

If you've been watching the news, reading blogs, or otherwise avoiding the undersides of rocks, you know that the cloud isn't the darling it used to be. From industry analyst firms to news outlets to organizations that have traveled the cloud path themselves, it seems the chorus of caution is growing louder every day.

Case in point: the final omnibus rule of HIPAA extends compliance requirements not only to healthcare organizations themselves, but any business associates that handle their data. Fail to cover this base and you're facing fines, sanctions, a tarnished reputation, and more. Worse yet, you don't even have to suffer a data security breach to incur the wrath of the HIPAA gods. Just ask Hospice of North Idaho [LINK TO] and Oregon Health & Science University [LINK TO], two organizations recently fined for noncompliance.

Novell offers a sane, enterprise-grade alternative to the cloud madness. For starters, take Novell Filr, our new mobile file sharing solution. We like to say it feels like Dropbox, but acts like Fort Knox. It mobilizes your files right where they already are-in your on-premise file system-where they remain protected by the layers of security, permissions, and protocol  you've spent countless dollars (not to mention IT man hours) building up around them. Don't fall prey to the idea that storing your data in the cloud is easy, safe or inexpensive. The stakes are high, and there's a better way.

Stay tuned next month as we tackle the pitfalls of email in the cloud. Think your data is safe from prying eyes there? Think again"¦
