Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

Dear all,

I upgraded the Filr 3.4 (828) client app to 3.4.2 (929) (on Windows 10 and win 7 x64 workstations) (Filr 3.4.2 Appliance with the latest 3.4.2 update) .

The sympthoms:
The user's Filr folder full empty (only the desktop.ini file was there) also there are no My Files / Network Shares / Shared with me folder shown.

The solution currently, the next:
Uninstall 3.4.2 (929) -> reboot pc -> install 3.4 (828) -> reboot pc.
After these steps everytihng is come back with all files and folders of the users.

Currently renamed files in the server:
/opt/novell/filr/apache-tomcat/webapps/desktopapp/novellfilr/windows/x64/MicroFocusFilrSetup-x64-3.4.2.exe
/opt/novell/filr/apache-tomcat/webapps/desktopapp/novellfilr/windows/x64/MicroFocusFilrSetup-x64-3.4.2.msi

Can I disable other system client apps to prevent the futhurer download / installation?

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

We try to update clients using the silent msi in a Zenworks bundle.

if we use the update button in the desktop client it seems to work.(not that i know )

If the problem occures we remove filr desktop , install filr desktop 3.4.0 (zenworks bundle) and then update through the desktop client console

This workaround is applicable to Windows 10 also? IMHO deinstall, reboot
and reinstall only works with Windows 7.

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

Would it be possible for all that suffer from this to create a Service Request on this.

With the Support Request, provide us with a compressed archive generated form a copy of the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Novell\Filr folder.

Allong with that:

- Was the client upgraded form an earlier version?

- Is the Windows and Dekstop client installed in English or an other language

- Is the issue also observed on a fresh installed (not upgraded) Filr desktop client?

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Bart.

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

You can disable the automatic upgrade by logging in to Filr as the Build-in admin

Then in the Administration Console, under the Desktop Application deselect "can be deployed" and select "Deploy files accessed via a URL to another location" and leave the URL field empty.

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

Update from Filr Engineering Team

It is very unfortunate to know that certain users are not able to access Filr folder post upgrade of Filr Windows Desktop client from 3.4 to 3.4.2

In-house testing indicates that client upgrade from 3.4 to 3.4.2 using the "Install Update" button under System Alerts of Filr console is successful and user is able to access Filr folders. However reported issue occurs only when user chooses to manually upgrade the client from 3.4 to 3.4.2 by executing the MicroFocusFilrSetup-x64-3.4.2.exe or MicroFocusFilrSetup-x64-3.4.2.msi, which is not the recommended way to upgrade the client.

If user wishes to upgrade the client from 3.4 to 3.4.2 using Filr setup binaries manually, then as a workaround user should execute MicroFocusFilrSetup-x64-3.4.2.exe (NOT MicroFocusFilrSetup-x64-3.4.2.msi) and follow the instructions on the installation wizard. Note that it does not matter if 3.4 Filr client was already running and a Filr user was logged into the client while 3.4.2 installation is already in progress. Post installation, user must restart the Windows machine for the upgrade to be effective before trying to login to the client for accessing the Filr folders.

If the user continues to experience problems even after applying the above workaround, then please provide us with a compressed archive of log files generated form at location %LOCALAPPDATA%\Novell\Filr.

thanks for the update. So basicly you are telling us that there is no problem with filr but with the way we update the desktop app.

We use Zenworks to update(install bundle) thats the way we force users to update the app. Else they will not update it.
I cant remember having this kind of problems with updates in the past .

I see the workaround but its not a workaround we can silently deploy to all the users?

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

Hi,

I´m just checking the different ways to install the desktop app.

"microfocusfilrsetup-x64-3.4.2 /Q" is not working, even it´s a
documented way for silent update

Error creating process <<none>>. Reason: File not found

"microfocusfilrsetup-x64-3.4.2 /C /T:c:\filr" creates the folder c:\filr
with two new files
- the well known msi
- setupmicrofocusfilr-x64-3.4.2.exe

this executable has no valuable parameters, also

setupmicrofocusfilr-x64-3.4.2 /qn /noreboot

should install the desktop app.

But using this way and even when the management system triggers the
reboot, the well known "filrservice stopped"-message appears

biting in the desk...

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

New filr 3.4.2 desktop client (929) is dependent on 6.4.2 .NET framework. Running exe file will automatically install all dependent packages. Hence it is advised to verify whether client has installed latest .NET framework or manually install before upgrading to 3.4.2 desktop client.

Could you please perform upgrade scenario in separate windows machine manually.
1) Have a Win 10/7 windows machine.
2) Upgrade 3.4.2 client manually.
3) Verify .Net framework version.
4) Verify whether files/folder are getting listed and are accessible.
This helps in understanding what is happening during manual upgrade. Since you have mentioned it’s a silent msi update, we are suspecting .NET framework update is getting skipped.

Note:
How to check the current .Net framework version? Please follow below links.
https://help.bittitan.com/hc/en-us/articles/115008111067-How-do-I-check-which-version-of-NET-Framework-I-have-installed-
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/migration-guide/how-to-determine-which-versions-are-installed

Collect following information which will help us in debugging the issue.
1) The current .NET framework version.
2) Event viewer log.

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

Hello, folks

just determined:

user with local admin rights can run the desktop app on windows 10 pro,
regardless from the .net version.

logoff the admin user, logon normal (restricted) user on the same
machine, you will get the well known error

on this machine (windows 10 pro) is installed .net 4.7.2, in registry
build number 461808

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

Hi Gotthard,

Please note that Filr Windows Desktop client is built using several components and the important one being FilrDriver.sys. For Filr Driver to be installed successfully via the Filr client installation wizard, administrator rights are required on the Filr Client installation process. This is the minimum requirement for Installing the Filr Desktop Application and therefore it is recommended that admin/local windows user irrespective of having administrator privileges must execute the Filr client setup EXE with "Run As Administrator" rights for successful installation of the Filr client.

Thanks.

Re: Filr DesktopApp 3.4.2 (929) error

Different ways to Install Filr Desktop Client 3.4.2

Silent Mode
Note: It is assumed that previous version Filr client is running in the taskbar and with Filr user logged.
1. Ensure .NET 4.6.2 is installed on the workstation.
2. Execute msiexec.exe /I "C:\filrsetup\MicroFocusFilr-x64-3.4.2.msi" /qn /norestart (Choose 32-bit or 64-bit version of MSI based on the operating system)
3. Post step 2, existing version of Filr client will be upgraded to 3.4.2.

For any installation errors, please refer Windows Event Viewer.

Non-Silent Mode
Note: It is assumed that previous version Filr client is running in the taskbar and with Filr user logged.
1. Execute MicroFocusFilr-x64-3.4.2.exe with "Run As Administrator" rights. (Choose 32-bit or 64-bit version of EXE based on the operating system)
2. Post step 1, existing version of Filr client will be upgraded to 3.4.2.

For any installation errors check on screen messages and install logs.

Thanks.
