filr mobile app - cooperation with office apps

Hi,

is there any app, that could use filr as backend? For example documents 2 free supports dropbox, google docs, skydrive, etc.
If you would like to edit some documents simlpy on-the-fly, you can't do that with Filr. For now, you have to edit the document separately in some app, then "open in" and upload to filr folder.
I don't have to say, that customers, who are already using dropbox/skydrive see this as a sort of absence in usability, when they are considering migration to filr.

I understand, that Filr is there only few weeks, but is there any activity from the Novell side to cooperate with developement teams, who are behind mobile office applications, so we could see in the future also "Filr" option in these office apps?

Thanks,

Jan

Some third-party apps do work but others don't.

Have you tried any particular apps or are you just asking? If I remember
correctly from beta testing I thought Documents 2 Go (I assume that's
what you mean by "documents 2 free") was one that did work.

Re: filr mobile app - cooperation with office apps

Well I tried them, however all these apps must be used with "open in" function.
This means you can prepare only one document to edit and when finished, you need to push it back to filr app.

What I'm talking about is that filr is used as background for these apps, so you can easily access any document in the cloud and modify it only by one tap on them and the synchronization with storage is automatic, no need to use "open in" and then pushing files to filr mobile app back again. I can't find a single doc. app (ios market) which has Filr option to choose among prevalent cloud services.

Re: filr mobile app - cooperation with office apps

I think what you want to be looking for are apps that support WebDAV, not specifically filr.

No, I think he is after apps supporting Filr...I have been wondering
the same thing. Currently we use an iOS app called PDF Expert. I
have Netstorage setup to provide WebDAV access to our network. Our
users can open PDF Expert and access a file on our network, mark it
up, and save it back to the network. With iOS, we have to
individually configure WebDAV on a per app basis. My hopes was that
with Filr, we would have a single point of configuration and access.
With Filr, I can access a PDF on my network, and I can tell it to open
the PDF using PDF Expert, but after I have marked it up, I don't see
any way to get the file back to Filr and to my network. Sure I can
save it back via WebDAV, but then why have the Filr iOS app installed
in the first place?

Re: filr mobile app - cooperation with office apps

How does dropbox work? I haven't used it, but just assumed it had to be configured inside each individual app.
I thought IOS security prevented such integrations between apps.

Re: filr mobile app - cooperation with office apps

Yes, I'm after doc apps supporting filr. As far as I was able to try these doc. apps, it seems they are connecting directly to the cloud webservice, not via other installed app.
So, it would be nice if some of these doc apps would also support "Filr access" (directly or through filr app - if it is possible).

This is still argument for our potential customers, who are already using cloud services and see Filr's approach as not very convenient for mobile devs (although they know Filr is more secure, because data is not leaving your company).

Here's the problem you'll have. If an app developer wants to add
support for something like Dropbox (as an example), there's a common
URL I'm sure that's used. Same for other services. But if a developer
wants to add Filr as an option, what URL would be used? The end-user
would have to configure a setting within the app to specify the URL for
the Filr server that he/she wants to use. It's not quite as easy.
That's not to say it can't happen, but it's definitely a bit trickier.

Re: filr mobile app - cooperation with office apps

I think it should not be so hard.
If you pick "dropbox" or other connections, you have to define at least login and password.
With FILR connection, you would have to insert in addition just URL and if apps can use standard WebDav protocol for this issue, then it should not be a problem ...
