ERROR ASPCONFIG

Executing aspnet_compiler -f -c -v "applicationName" -p "location of solution" -d "C:\inetpub\wwwroot\appilcationname" In Developer Command Prompt for VS2015

i get an error as :

ERROR ASPCONFIG: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition ='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This eror can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.
