Is it possible to "schedule" SmartUpdate in WebInspect Enterprise?

Jump to solution

Hello experts,

I'm a trial user of WebInspect.  I've been looking for a way to schedule SmartUpdate (updating security information database). It seems there's no way to schedule it in (Desktop) WebInspect.  It's understantable since it's a desktop application. Can we do this in WebInspect Enterprise?   My client is interested in WebInspect and he is asking if he can schedule SmartUpdate. Thanks,

tatsuo

It is simple to Schedule a SmartUpdate in the WIE Console (thick client), under the panels for Administration > SmartUpdate.  The bottom pane allows you to add a Scheduled SmartUpdate as one-time or recurring.  I am attaching a screen shot for your understanding.

In WebInspect (desktop), SmartUpdate is enabled on-load by default.  This can be disabled under the Application Settings.  The user can also trigger a SmartUpdate at any time manually using the button in the Toolbar area.

For WebInspect Enterprise ("WIE"), the WebInspect Enterprise Manager server is the sole component that contacts HPE for SmartUpdates.  Once the updates have been downloaded, they are distributed to the connected Sensors automatically, with a caveat.

  • If the updates were for the SecureBase, attack database, then those are pushed automatically to each Sensor whenever they ping the server (heartbeat) and certainly before the Sensor is issued any scan command.
  • If the updates were for the Sensor binaries (WebInspect desktop installation), then those are not automatically sent out.  Instead, your WIE administrator must connect tot he Manager with the WIE Console (thick client), and open Administration > SmartUpdate Approvals, and mark the recent release as "Approved".  At that point, that new version will be pushed out to the connected Sensors.

  • If you also happen to use WebInspect desktops whose Activation Licenses have their Server Mode set to "Roaming" or "Fixed" rather than the typical "Standalone", then those desktop installations will also be updated from the local WIE Manager server and not from HPE directly.  That Server Mode feature is rarely used, but can be useful for centralized control in-house of your WebInspect desktop users..  Only when the WebInspect desktop license has Server Mode = Standalone is it permitted to SmartUpdate itself (described earlier).
