This new Forum is garbage

This new forum software, lithium, is garbage.  The interface is a pain for browsing subjects and searching.  It is also slow.  I do not want to have to fight to find useful information.

Since this is the Micro Focus support future, I do not feel this is satisfactory and I am officially starting my Micro Focus decommissioning.  It is hard enough finding Micro Focus support with google, but now that the forums are gone, and this nasty Lithium is its replacement, it is time to replace Micro Focus with better supported products.

I have seen similar crappy "community" boards on the worst website in the world, aka HP website.

The forums made it much easier to see the history of products and common problems people have had.  With out it, I do not see how to support Micro Focus in my company.

I am paying for support but usually I was able to solve my issues by referencing the forums.  Now, I am stuck with the paid support tickets, and I rather move on to non-Mirco Focus solutions where marketing and customer support with will be superior.

Let me make a suggestion that may help remedy that perception.   Each page in the community generally has multiple options for an RSS feed.   My favorite and fast way to peruse the community is to use the "Feedbro" Chrome extension and to subscribe to areas I'm interested in.  For example:

------------------------

It's almost as fast as the old NNTP stuff for just reading.   Clicking on one of the message subjects in the feed reader takes me directly to the post so I can scroll through the discussion thread:

Another alternative is to use the subscription options on our site to bring the content directly to your inbox.  You can reply directly from email into the community and not even have to visit the site.

We have forums.  We've always had forums.  We'll continue to have forums.   I see you've been active in the OES area before we migrated the old forums here.   If you go to the OES community page,  you'll find the OES forum in the gray bar under the header titled "OES User Discussions".   On the old site we had multiple forums under OES which we've now combined into one, but separate out by filters.   On the right side of that page, you can click on a filter, "Client-Windows" for example and now you'll be looking at only the forum posts that deal with the Windows client.

There are some downsides to this new platform, but there are a lot of upsides too.  In the previous community iteration, if you wanted to find the Cool Solutions (Tips & Information) and forum areas, you had to go to two different sites.  Now we have forums, tip & information articles, and blogs all in the same location and searchable under one site.  We're in the process of moving all our enhancement request idea exchanges here as well.

If you're like me, you may be mourning the loss of our NNTP interface.   I loved that  method of interacting with the forums.  Alas, our NNTP vendor no longer does NNTP.  NNTP is a dying protocol and though we could find some unsupported open source systems to replace our NNTP servers we didn't find an acceptable community platform that would support and integrate.  Our IT department also needed to have a supported system, and nobody makes it any more.  I wish they did.

Anyway...please don't give up on us.   I think there are ways for you to still get the information you need out of the community.

Re: This new Forum is garbage

It's definitely taking some getting used to for me. Agreed, it can be slow browsing the site. In my case, it turned out to be a page load issue, so I disabled images in my browser, which fixed things right up. Now the site is quite snappy.

Yes, the HP forums ARE unspeakably bad. *shudder*

That's just not an acceptable solution for someone that alternates between our community and their favorite porn site.   I'm just sayin.....  😜

Seriously, that's good feedback.  Maybe we should look at reducing the number of images on this site to help speed it up.

Re: This new Forum is garbage

Thank you for this feedback. Thanks @kgroneman  and @benjaminhare for offering some suggestions as well.

Can we also invite you to participate to help us improve the UX/UI? This is something we are actively pursuing at the moment and is a priority as we are wanting to be sure we offer the very best experience we can. In fact, we have a project kicking off this week that we would be happy to add you as a stakeholder to.

Do you have some specific suggestions of what you would like to see improve? We look forward to your further feedback.

Re: This new Forum is garbage

Sure, I would love to participate in something like that. Specific suggestions?

  • Less clutter, or at least a "compact" option
  • Image toggle
  • Keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+E to edit, CTRL+ENTER to post, CTRL+Q for a Quick reply)
  • A draft feature
  • Keyboard navigation (CTRL+ALT+S for my subs, then arrow down to access them, T to tag, R to mark as read, etc. You get the idea. Something akin to gMail's keyboard navigation, ideally.) At present I can achieve most of this from my RSS reader, but I still have to actually visit the site in order to post a reply.

Please forgive and educate me if any of these options already exist.

Re: This new Forum is garbage

@benjaminhare  The less clutter we are already planning on addressing.   The other options you suggest aren't available currently in this platform but we'll include you in our input groups going forward and perhaps we can get some of this implemented.
