8E14 Error on Saving Doc

I had help off of 2012 upgrade until now and it has come back to bite me

With either the GW8 SP3 client or the 2012 SP1 HP1 client, we are
getting interittent 8E14 errors when doing the following :

1. Open Doc
2. Edit the Doc
3. File / Save As
4. Save as a new document in the Library

This is occuring with Office 2003 Word docs

Re: 8E14 Error on Saving Doc

Been there, and still there in fact. There should be a thread lurking that I started on the subject. It appears that GW thinks some docs are corrupt/wrong format (mismatched file extensions), even though you can open them fine, when you try to save them again it borks. We found this mainly in Excel, but could be everywhere, The only thing we've found to 'fix' it, is when you find a document with the problem follow the steps below (tweak depending upon office/openoffice version in use):

1. Check out and copy doc locally
2. Open doc from checked out copy
3. Make a change to the document so you can save it
4. Save as... and choose an OLDER office format, office 97/2k etc.
5. Check document back in

You should now be able to open, edit and save the document with the DMS, if you've still got issues, check the document properties page and make sure the document extension doc/docx matches the format you've saved in.

Not a fix, in fact a right royal PITA. But gets you access to the document you need.

Re: 8E14 Error on Saving Doc

Mark - had read your posting from October and was not encouraged .... !!

This appears to be happening in both .doc (2003) and .docx (2010) files
- very intermittent

Did you open an S/R with Novell ?

Re: 8E14 Error on Saving Doc

Hi Steve,

I didn't at the time because the affected files were so infrequent (and at a customer site) it was difficult to reproduce for NTS. Our support desk have the steps documented to fix when the customer reports an issue with a file. If I'd have had the same issue here in-house then I would have done, because I can sit on a file with an error for a day or two whilst they investigate. I haven't upgraded in-house to OES and GW2012 from NW and GW803 for this very reason. We also extensively use DMS and I haven;t got the time nor inclination to FUBAR it, we also still use lots of pre-Office 2007 on workstations and my budget won't stretch to upgrading them to be supported by 2012 either. 😞 Wish they'd get Open/Libre Office supported, would migrate to it in a heartbeat.

Re: 8E14 Error on Saving Doc

I have followed your procedure but had to make a few alterations

1. I saved as a .dotx
2. Checked back in
3. Modified the propterties of the document to make the doc type docx

I ended up doing this because I was getting the same 8e14 results if I
only saved the .doc doc in the older (97,2000) format

Thanks for your help on this

Steve

Re: 8E14 Error on Saving Doc

Hi Vovo,

Not as far as I am aware, if you are getting it consistently I'd suggest you open an SR so Novell can troubleshoot and finally nail it.
