GW Messenger crashing server on every conversation/reply

When opening a chat, typing a message then closing the window the server falls over....then it restarts the service and everyone logs in.

Happens everytime there is a new chat if you close that window, or the person replying closes the window.

Had this open with support now since verion 2018 was released, had multiple upgrades now on version groupwise_messenger_full_18.0.2_7769.tar.gz, still the same issue.

Anyone else have this or just me, support seem to be struggling

I've not seen any other SRs on this issue. When you say it "restarts
the service" is this the client on the workstation or is it the agents
on the server? If you are referring to the agents restarting we need
to get a core file from the server. Please grab that and upload it to
the ftp server. Then notify Nick, who is working on your SR, and he
can get it submitted to engineering as a defect. If it is crashing on
the client side, would you do the following:

1. Download and install procmon. Start it up before you start
Messenger. Then run through Messenger and duplicate the issue. Once
it crashes, stop Procmon and save the file. Zip that with your SR
number and upload it to the ftp server. Notify Nick and let him know
that it is there.

2. Gather all logs in the c:\program files (x86)\Novell\Messenger\Log
Files

Thanks,

Pam

Re: GW Messenger crashing server on every conversation/reply

We are experiencing the exact same problem. Messenger agent crashes after every conversation, when the session is closed. Takes a few seconds, agent restarts and clients are logged in again automatically. Messenger system is SLES 12 and GroupWise 18 on a different server with OES 2015 SP1. Nothing in the log files, even if log level is set to highest.

Did you find any solution, yet?

Cheers,
Michel

Re: GW Messenger crashing server on every conversation/reply

We started seeing the same behavior last week on sles 12 sp3. We opened a ticket and were told the developer was out on vacation. I sent in a 20 megabyte core dump this mornng. HOw much of a chance is there we'll see any solutions this month?

Hi,

Please let us know what build of Messenger you have installed and the SR number (you can send that to me privately if you prefer). Thanks in advance.

Hi SveN,

I recommend you open an SR and work through those channels on this one....

Re: GW Messenger crashing server on every conversation/reply

Hi,

I still have an SR open with no solution...
ridiculous that they have a bug since 6 months which makes messenger unusable and they have no fix.

Re: GW Messenger crashing server on every conversation/reply

After months of debugging and various efforts (including assistance from Microfocus-Support), we have found a solution that works for us. It is ridiculously easy...

Try a different CPU! There seems to be a bug in current INTEL CPUs that causes crashes with SLES 12 under certain circumstances. Two TIDs from Microfocus with workarounds might help:

https://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7022289
https://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7019037

However, in our case, the solution was to move the VM to a different hardware server with an older CPU. The virtualization layer is still the same, such as the VM itself. No more crashes...

Hi Michel,

Earlier this week Messenger 18.0.2 was released. It contains the fix for this issue.
