GWIA always abend

I'm already update to 8.0.3 but the GWIA always abend.
I need to restart the GWIA in 3-5 days.
The GWIA is support 100 IMAP client now.
If can't fix this, how to setup the schedule job to restart GWIA everyday?

Many thanks/Theo

What is the abend error? Posting the ABEND 1 of the most recent
abend in the abend log would be very useful.
What shows in the GWIA logs just before the abends?
Have you been monitoring GWIA's status such as through its web
interface at http://yourserverIP:9850/
How many threads (standard and secure) do you have for IMAP?

This is entirely dependant on the platform you are on. Assuming NetWare
from the term abend, its a bit tricky because GWIA won't always close
down quickly when commanded to. I would cron two ncfs about 20-30
minutes apart every night at the least busy time, first to unload gwia,
next to load gwia

Re: GWIA always abend

Hi,

Please rig your server to get cores when applications fault. This is not like a old Netware cores, where the server dies, bu rather just at an application level. They can be processed by novell-getcore to create what amounts to a linux analog of the NetWare abend log.

As for restarting the GWIA when it faults. There is the GroupWise HA stuff. Frankly I got tired of that an made my own little script to check to see if the GWIA is running and restart it. It actually works so quickly that GroupWise monitor oftent does not see the agent go down. Here is a prototype you can customize...

#!/bin/sh

rm /tmp/Resurrection.tmp
rm /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt

echo "Polling `date` ..." > /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt

ps -ef | grep "/opt/novell/groupwise/agents/bin" | grep -v grep > /tmp/Resurrection.tmp

# You customize these to match the text from ps -ef to look for each agent...

gws1mta=`ps -ef | grep "/opt/novell/groupwise/agents/bin/gwmta @gws1.mta" /tmp/Resurrection.tmp | wc -l`

gws1poa=`ps -ef | grep "/opt/novell/groupwise/agents/bin/gwpoa @gws1_po.poa" /tmp/Resurrection.tmp | wc -l`

gwinter=`ps -ef | grep "/opt/novell/groupwise/agents/bin/gwinter @webac80a.waa" /tmp/Resurrection.tmp | wc -l`

gwia=`ps -ef | grep "/opt/novell/groupwise/agents/bin/gwia @gwia.cfg" /tmp/Resurrection.tmp | wc -l`

# You customize / add a section for each agent, including the appropriate rcgrpwise stop / start command for that agent.

# - - - - - - - - - - - - Mail Transfer Agents - - - - - - - - -

if [ "$gws1mta" -eq "0" ]
then
{
echo "ALERT! gws1mta NOT running... restarting!" >> /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt
/usr/sbin/rcgrpwise stop GWS1
sleep 5
/usr/sbin/rcgrpwise start GWS1
echo "`date` Restarted MTA GWS1" >> /grpwise/Resurrection.log
}
else
{
echo " -OK- gws1mta IS running..." >> /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt
}
fi

# - - - - - - - - - - Post Offices - - - - - - - - -

if [ "$gws1poa" -eq "0" ]
then
{
echo "ALERT! gws1poa NOT running... restarting!" >> /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt
/usr/sbin/rcgrpwise stop GWS1_PO.GWS1
sleep 5
/usr/sbin/rcgrpwise start GWS1_PO.GWS1
echo "`date` Restarted POA GWS1_PO.GWS1" >> /grpwise/Resurrection.log
}
else
{
echo " -OK- gws1poa IS running..." >> /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt
}
fi

# - - - - - - - - - - - - Other Agents - - - - - - - - - - -

if [ "$gwia" -eq "0" ]
then
{
echo "ALERT! gwia NOT running... restarting!" >> /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt
/usr/sbin/rcgrpwise stop gwia.gws3
sleep 5
/usr/sbin/rcgrpwise start gwia.gws3
echo "`date` Restarted GWIA gwia.gws3" >> /grpwise/Resurrection.log
}
else
{
echo " -OK- gwia IS running..." >> /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt
}
fi

if [ "$gwinter" -eq "0" ]
then
{
echo "ALERT! gwinter NOT running... restarting!" >> /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt
/usr/sbin/rcgrpwise stop webac80a.gws1
sleep 5
/usr/sbin/rcgrpwise start webac80a.gws1
echo "`date` Restarted GWINTER webac80a.gws1" >> /grpwise/Resurrection.log
}
else
{
echo " -OK- gwinter IS running..." >> /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt
}
fi

# - - - - - - - - - - - - And We Are Outta Here! - - - - - - -

cat /tmp/Resurrection.Status.txt

Then you run this in root's cron:

# Check GroupWise Agents, and start up any that are missing
*/1 * * * * /grpwise/Resurrection.sh > /dev/null 2>&1

which checks each agent every minute.

That sounds like a Linux thing, I don't recall seeing any of those
beasties have ABENDs, of course we haven't confirmed yet that airhk is
running NetWare, but the evidence leads that way.

You prototype sure looks interesting though for those of us who have
our servers over to the penguin side.

Hmm, from what I could read of your GWIA config it did look like 10 at
the top, but I see lower down the 100. Strange those numbers don't match,
something to dig into. At least you've taken that possible issue out of
the equation.

Abends go there by default, Abends are a NetWare thing, therefor we've
been running on that assumption. Please confirm the involved operation
system with version.
Admin level IDs can see the system folder in the SYS volume, trick is
to have a mapping to the root of sys, which is an easily overwritten
default.

ah, that one got mangled on my nntp reader,just like it did with the
other page he posted, might just be time to start thinking of a
replacement that can better handle such content.

Ah, then for the future, don't use the term ABEND as that is so NetWare.
That is why you aren't able to find an sys:/system/abend.log as that just
doesn't exist in Linux. Perhaps you could describe the failure you are
having (server hang? Application segfaulting?...). Including relevant
lines out of /var/logs/messages would be useful as that is where most
things of significance end up. That is sort of the closest in Linux to
the old sys:/system/SYS$LOG.ERR file of NetWare.

Bob-O-Rama's solution is a bit of a challenge for someone new to Linux
such as yourself. An easier work around that you did ask for is to use
cron to just restart GWIA
edit the file '/etc/crontab' adding the line will do the trick for 1
minute after midnight
1 0 * * * rcgrpwise restart gwia.internet

replace 'gwia.internet' with the name of your gwia as you see it when you
issue the command
rcgrpwise status
