GroupWise 18.01 crash dragging an email that is attached to anotheremail, to a new email

Hi

I've got a strange client crash. If a user has an email, that has an email as an attachment, and then tries to drag the email attachment to a new email,
GroupWise hangs for a moment, and then crashes.

But (and this is the strange bit), if I remote control the users PC (using TightVNC), and then do the operation for them (drag the attached email to a new email), it works (everytime).

Any ideas on this? User environment is Windows 7 Pro, fully patched. Looking in the event log, there are two Error entries :
1) .NET Runtime
Application: grpwise.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: exception code c0000005, exception address 72CBF10B
Stack:

and on the same timestamp 2) Application Error
Faulting application name: grpwise.exe, version: 18.0.1.39782, time stamp: 0x5a8e9169
Faulting module name: GWMXLIB1.dll, version: 18.0.1.39782, time stamp: 0x5a8e9022
Exception code: 0xc0000005

Re: GroupWise 18.01 crash dragging an email that is attached

fwiw I just tested this and the same happens - spinning ring for a few seconds, then GroupWise 18.0.1 closes. This is on Windows 10 v1803, so it's nothing to do with the Windows version. Identical errors in the application event log as well.

This may sound strange, but have you tried updating the video driver
on the user's computer? I have fixed some quirky issues by doing
that.

Re: GroupWise 18.01 crash dragging an email that is attached

and just now another customer called me, reporting the same issue. can't drag attachment from one email to another.

work-around is to drag attachment to desktop, then into other email.

Sounds fairly repeatable. You should probably open an SR and report
this. As it is a bug, the SR should get refunded to you.

I may, but often times just making a quick report here of an easily repeatable problem causes a Micro Focus employee to become interested and report it to engineering.

Sure, but keep in mind this isn't the official method for reporting
bugs, so there are no guarantees that it will get picked up here.

Thank you Laura for posting that. I don't have access to that info.

Cheers,

Thanks, I opened an low-priority SR just asking to be notified if/when there's an FTF for that.

Re: GroupWise 18.01 crash dragging an email that is attached toanotheremail, to a new email

Hi Laura
Thanks for the defect info.

I'll keep a look out for a fix. I'll also try updating video drivers, as it's seems really weird that GW doesn't crash, when using VNC to remote control a client.

Cheers
Kevin

Re: GroupWise 18.01 crash dragging an email that is attached

The original 18.0.2 did not fix this (nor was it alleged to), but having installed the *new* 18.0.2 released today, the problem is fixed for me. I'm not aware of anything else changing on my system that could account for this.

Re: GroupWise 18.01 crash dragging an email that is attached toanotheremail, to a new email

Hi Laura,
We've just installed GroupWise 18.0.2 on both clients and servers, and I can confirm that this bug still exists.

I'll raise a SR.

Cheers
Kevin

Re: GroupWise 18.01 crash dragging an email that is attached

I had another user report this issue, which I thought had been fixed. It turns out I was originally looking at a slightly different problem (more broad); until 18.0.2, I found that dragging *any* attachment from one email to another would crash the client. This is what I found to be fixed by 18.0.2, and I simply thought this was all the same problem. I never specifically tested the *exact* scenario the OP posted, until another user showed me the problem.

Scenario - You want to attach an email message to a reply to a different message chain; to me it's an unusual work-flow, not the way I'd ever have thought to do it, but this is the way it makes sense to this user:

1. Locate an email in the list the you wish to attach; open it to verify it's the right message
2. Click Forward as Attachment to create a new email with the message attached
3. Locate another email you wish to reply to; click Reply
4. Drag the message attachment from the blank forward message to the new Reply
***wheel spins for a bit, client crash-closes***

What I showed him he can do to avoid the crash is to drag the message directly from the message list into the Reply message. This works, but I can see why he doesn't like to do it this way... he has dozens of messages with the same subject, there's a specific one he needs to attach so he has to open several until he finds the correct message (and the wrong one might be disastrous). By clicking "Forward as Attachment" in that message window, he's 100% sure he's created an attachment of the correct message which he can set aside until he's ready to attach it to another message. Having to open several, identify the one he wants, then go back to the list and figure out exactly which one it is in the list is cumbersome. I did show him he can re-open the message after it's been attached to verify it's the right one, but that's yet another awkward step. He just wants it all to work the way it did in 2014R2.

For whatever reasons this is something he needs to do several times per week.

The user currently has the 18.1 release client, and I have confirmed the same bug on my system which is running an FTF I got for some other problem, 18.1 12/14/2018.

I opened an SR; the engineer confirmed he has duplicated the bug but it is yet unsolved. He added my case to the defect
