Groupwise 2014: How do I change the FID of a user

Hello!

In ConsoleOne you can easily change a users FID, but is it possible to do that in the new Administration Console in Groupwise 2014?

The GW 2014 Administration Console does not provide a means to edit the FID.

If nobody can think of a workaround I would open a SR, perhaps there is some behind the scenes way to do it, or at a minimum use the Requirements Portal to make an enhancement request.

I know how to "create" a user with a specified FID - like this:

curl -k --user admin -H "Content-Type: application/json" -X POST -d
'{"name":"jlebowski","surname":"Lebowski","givenName":"Jeff","fileId":"big"}'
https://192.168.110.222:9710/gwadmin-service/domains/<domname>/postoffices/<poname>/users

So, the syntax here "domname" is of course the name of your domain and poname is
the name of your po. without the brackets of course. I'll find out if there is
a way to "alter" the FID after the fact, but if you are trying to alter the FID,
you are probably doing it right after creating, so just delete the user and
start over!

Re: Groupwise 2014: How do I change the FID of a user

Hello,

Yes, that’s right there never was a way really to “hot edit” the GroupWise FID even on the older versions.

What I always found cool about GroupWise is that if you mass provisioned 1,000 users it didn’t actually bother to create their mailboxes until the first time they logged in. This meant there was no massive load on the system and I always liked that smart approach.

You could then nip in and convince GroupWise to give a particular FID for each user but it was a bit of manual process involving disabling snapins on ConsoleOne . Once the user has a FID, assigned when their mailbox is created, there is no way to really edit it on the fly. The new REST API creation method is much better and means it’s easier to script.

You can archive mail and re-FID an archive (old tools exist somewhere on the Novell site) but it’s a lot easier to remove the user and then create with a particular FID if they don’t have any mail yet.

Hope this helps.

Given the above URL references GroupWise 5.5 through 7.0 I'd be vary
wary of using that against GroupWise 2014 as they've had plenty of time
to test with 8.0 and 2012 let alone 2014!

I think you'd be better off asking Netmail whether it's supported with
2014 rather than here.

HTH.

Re: Groupwise 2014: How do I change the FID of a user

Hi,

The FID editor that was available to change the FID on an archive does not work against a GroupWise 2014 system.

You can create a user with a specific FID - just look up a little in this thread for DZanre's post about the command to use.

Perhaps if you tell us a little more about your situation we could give more specific advice.

Cheers,

Re: Groupwise 2014: How do I change the FID of a user

Here's a script to create a user with a specific FID.

#/bin/bash

# -- Script to create GW user with a given FID --
# -- Edit IP PORT and GWADMIN values to match your system

IP=10.10.10.10
PORT=9710
GWADMIN=admin
read -p "Enter GroupWise Admin Password: " ADMINPWD
read -p "Enter First Name for $GWID: " FIRST
read -p "Enter Last Name for $GWID: " LAST
read -p "Enter GroupWise UserID for new user: " GWID
read -p "Enter FID for $GWID: " FID
read -p "Enter Domain for $GWID: " DOM
read -p "Enter Post Office for $GWID: " PO
read -p "Enter new password for $GWID: " USERPWD
BASEURL="https://$IP:$PORT/gwadmin-service/domains/$DOM/postoffices/$PO/users"
USERDATA='{"name":"'$GWID'","givenName":"'$FIRST'","surname":"'$LAST'","fileId":"'$FID'"}'
PWDDATA='{"userPassword":{"value":"'$USERPWD'"}}'
PWDURL="$BASEURL/$GWID/clientoptions"
curl -k --user $GWADMIN:$ADMINPWD -H "content-type:application/json" -X POST --data $USERDATA $BASEURL

Hi

next time I need to edit a FID

Morris has an excellent script there - thank you Morris 🙂

Just note that this is for the creation of a user with a specific FID and not for editing a FID.

Re: Groupwise 2014: How do I change the FID of a user

Sorry folks, had a mixup in order of prompts and a missing command at the end. Here is the fixed version:

#/bin/bash

# -- Script to create GW user with a given FID --
# -- Edit IP PORT and GWADMIN values to match your system

IP=10.10.10.10
PORT=9710
GWADMIN=admin
read -p "Enter GroupWise Admin Password: " ADMINPWD

read -p "Enter GroupWise UserID for new user: " GWID
read -p "Enter First Name for $GWID: " FIRST

read -p "Enter Last Name for $GWID: " LAST
read -p "Enter FID for $GWID: " FID
read -p "Enter Domain for $GWID: " DOM
read -p "Enter Post Office for $GWID: " PO
read -p "Enter new password for $GWID: " USERPWD
BASEURL="https://$IP:$PORT/gwadmin-service/domains/$DOM/postoffices/$PO/users"
USERDATA='{"name":"'$GWID'","givenName":"'$FIRST'","surname":"'$LAST'","fileId":"'$FID'"}'
PWDDATA='{"userPassword":{"value":"'$USERPWD'"}}'
PWDURL="$BASEURL/$GWID/clientoptions"
curl -k --user $GWADMIN:$ADMINPWD -H "content-type:application/json" -X POST --data $USERDATA $BASEURL

curl -k --user $GWADMIN:$ADMINPWD -H "content-type:application/json" -X PUT --data $PWDDATA $PWDURL

cheers,
