MAC mail IMAP connection ?

Hi,

Has anyone run into problems sending auth mail from MACs.
I get IMAP mail perfectly and can read, but not reply.
When replying using the MACs mail program over port 25 it never connects.

Can be a firewall issue, but any other mailclient /thunderbird etc. does it OK

Where and how to troubleshoot?

Sincerely,

DB

What exactly do the SMTP settings say in Mail? Do you only have one SMTP
server defined?

Re: MAC mail IMAP connection ?

Only one SMTP server (only one server at all 😉 )
A typical small business user - all on one server
Only 7 users
I'm the only one trying out Apples Mail as a client
and will be adding iPhone to the bunch and will need
the ability to IMAP the mail (it doesn't send from my iPod Touch either)
-same error -> the server appears to be offline wich is odd.

Have a watchguard Edge 10x as firewall - so it can also be this.

Don't know where to start to look for the problem.

DB

SMTP/MIME Settings
SMTP service: Enabled
Use SSL: Disabled
Number of SMTP send threads: 8
Number of SMTP receive threads: 16
Hostname/DNS "A record" name: one.dba.fi
Relay hosts for outbound messages: None specified
Scan cycle for send directory: 10 seconds

Okay - but I mean what does the SMTP setting in the Mac Mail app look like?
Do you have a user/password entered? Do you see anything in the GWIA log
that indicates it's even getting there?

Re: MAC mail IMAP connection ?

The settings there are OK - but tried to look for logs in gwia
and they don't even excist. Just error in the error logs (cannot copy the message, but every log file contains the same text - will have to see on monday at work)
GW system is on NSS but the logs are generated to a linux filesystem - can this be a problem?

Sincerely,

DB

Shouldn't be. We'll need look to see why you don't have logs I guess.
Give us more info on Monday.

Re: MAC mail IMAP connection ?

error was this:

zERR_DATASTREAM_NOT_FOUND(20154)

and this is in each log created back as long as I can see.

They can be read either in _admin/gwlogs or thru the webinterface /logfiles

Don't know why this happens. Otherwise everything works fine.
(GW 8 hp1 - upgraded from GW 7 this spring - no issues)
If I remember correctly this also was the case in GW 7
It's an old Netware system moved to OES2 last summer 2008.
Anders Gustafsson made the move and upgrade.

Sincerely,

DB

This is in the actual GWIA log? Or this is in some Linux log?

Thanks.

Re: MAC mail IMAP connection ?

This is the Gwia logs as specified in the configuration of the gwia.
looked it up in the webinterface when first trying to find them.

I will try to move the log location to the same NSS vol as gw itself and see if this helps. It can be a rights issue - maybe - just a guess.

I'll post back

Re: MAC mail IMAP connection ?

It probably was a rights issue as the logs work fine now on the same vol as GW itself.

I will look for anything hitting gwia as I try to login from outside with my MAC mail using IMAP.
I normally use the superb new GW client, but sometimes in the near future I want to be able to use imap from an iPod Touch or iPhone.

Thanks for your help so far,

DB

PS. Noticed the new upcoming book on moving GW - good work and so needed.

Re: MAC mail IMAP connection ?

Just to end this thread.
I finally saw from the logs that the MAC imap client doesn't even hit the gwia when sending, so I think there's a problem on my Watchguard firewall config somehow.

Thanks for the effort Danita.

The error is on no other client than the mac/ipod touch, so it seems very odd.

Thanks,

DB
