Move to new server GW2012 eDir connections

Groupwise 2012 server is being moved from a Server 2003 to a Server 2012.

We have a virtual server with eDir (8.7) that serves as the master, and the existing 2003 server (with Groupwise 2012) as a replica. Can we move our Groupwise 2012 to the new server hardware and install the Novell client rather than install eDir? We will be upgrading to 2014 in 45 days.

I think that would work, but given that I've been fully Linux side for
GW the past while, take it with a grain of salt.
Since you are going to 2014 so soon, perhaps hold off on moving the
data until you do it as a migration and don't have to have any eDir or
Novell Client bits on the new server at all. This will also give you a
cleaner backout option for the upgrade.

Re: Move to new server GW2012 eDir connections

we appreciate the reply, thank you -- wish Linux were an option (Cent OS is a fav)... The move to 2012 gives us options - all is virtualized, and we can move vhds from one server to another quickly. ((testing it right now)). So we spin up another 2012 with GW14 software in place, shut down the agents on GW12 and re-assign the vhds to a GW14 machine, then install the application. Note: the current GW2012 is on very old hardware - in 2006 it was top shelf.

That would work very well, and given the 'vintage' of the hardware, makes this an excellent approach.
Danita & Paul's book on the migration "GroupWise 2014 Upgrade Guide - Moving to new server," that is available at http://postie.caledonia.net/store/ in both PDF and/or dead tree editions will also have many useful pointers in making sure your migration goes smoothly. While it doesn't mention the database move you are doing, it covers the other important bits. Just make sure you get a good snap shot of the vhds before the migration so you have a path back if it happens to blow up along the way.
