Opening EML files from Windows Explorer - Error Message

When GW client isn't already open we get the following error message when opening an EML file in Windows Explorer (Win7 64).

"There was a problem sending the command to the program."

The email ends up opening, you just have the annoying error dialog.

This seems to be DDE related as deleting the following registry key prevents the error from occurring:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec

I have not yet determined if there are any negative side effects of deleting the above mentioned key.

Does anyone have any detail on why this happens and what the best resolution would is?

Thanks,

Chris Wardell

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the forums and thank you for your question.

Sorry for the slow response.

Please confirm which support pack version of the GroupWise 2012 client you are running?

Cheers,
Laura Buckley

What do you have under there? Perhaps ours was just broken. An export
of mine yields.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec]
@="RetrieveMime (\"%1\")"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec\Application]
@="GroupWise"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec\Topic]
@="Command"

and I get the same thing of complaining to the log in request. I don't
have any single sign on operating at the moment, is that the same case
for you or do you get in without having to log in to GroupWise?
Client build for this test is 118451, GW 2012.0.3 16/11/2014

Re: Opening EML files from Windows Explorer - Error Message

@Laura,

I checked and found that we are actually running 14.0.0 (115243) at the client. But after some digging it looks like it is from installing 14 as an upgrade over 12.

@Andy

Those values are the same as ours.

I did some testing on a VM running Windows 7:

First - Installed GroupWise Client 12SP2

Here is a registry dump of the keys of interest:

** BEGIN REG FILE **
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\GroupWise\\grpwise.exe\",2"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\GroupWise\\grpwise.exe\" /ddeex /bl"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec]
@="RetrieveMime (\"%1\")"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec\Application]
@="GroupWise"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec\Topic]
@="Command"
** END REG FILE **

In this state opening EML files works fine.

Second - Installed 14.0.0 as an upgrade.
Here is a registry dump of the keys of interest:

** BEGIN REG FILE **
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\GroupWise\\grpwise.exe\",2"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\GroupWise\\grpwise.exe\" /eml=\"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec]
@="RetrieveMime (\"%1\")"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec\Application]
@="GroupWise"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\ddeexec\Topic]
@="Command"
** END REG FILE **

In this state the error occurs: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

Notice that the Open\Command value has changed.

** V12 **
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\GroupWise\\grpwise.exe\" /ddeex /bl"
** END V12 **

** V14 **
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\GroupWise\\grpwise.exe\" /eml=\"%1\""
** END V14 **

Third - Removed 14.0.0.
Noticed that the DDEEXEC key was not remove from the registry by the uninstaller, so manually removed it.
Installed 14.0.0.

Here is a registry dump of the keys of interest:

** BEGIN REG FILE **
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\GroupWise.File.eml]
@=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\GroupWise.File.eml\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\GroupWise\\grpwise.exe\",2"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\GroupWise.File.eml\shell]
@=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open]
@=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\GroupWise.File.eml\shell\Open\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\GroupWise\\grpwise.exe\" /eml=\"%1\""
** END REG FILE **

In this state the error does not occur.

Notice that the DDEEXEC entries were not created on a clean install of 14.0.0.

For now it looks like removing the DDEEXEC key is the solution for our specific issue.

Thanks,

Chris Wardell

Re: Opening EML files from Windows Explorer - Error Message

Chris,

I wouldn't touch the 14.0 client with a ten foot pole.
Better try 2014 SP2
