Additional information #3: i created a brand new GWIA (rather creatively
called "GWIA2" :-), and i was able to start it successfully without any
problems. I ran through the two or three configuration items which
actually needed setting on the GWIA and am able to successfully receive
email now. However, the messages i send don't seem to go out, even
though i've changed the default GWIA (in GroupWise System Operations ->
Internet Addressing) to be my new GWIA2.

Any suggestions?

When you send a message in which queue does it end up ?

Hi Ed!

I don't know enough about GWIA queues to answer that question
accurately, but the good news is that it doesn't matter because the
messages started flowing shortly after i posted.

Now all i need to work out is:

- How to get the 36 messages which are queued in my Internet domain
waiting for the old GWIA moved over to the new GWIA to get sent.

- Why my first GWIA broke and what i can do to avoid the problem in
future. It was working perfectly at 11:00 this morning, and when i
received the call from my client at 14:00, it had crashed and wouldn't
restart. No SLES updates had been applied since 17 Dec 2009, nor had i
made any changes to GW or SLES configurations in that time. The system
was last rebooted on 22 Dec 2009, so there seems nothing that i have (or
haven't done) that could have caused this.

Hmm...good question on that one. Have you looked at the message content
? Maybe there is something in there that includes an address for which
gwia. I'm not 100% sure as I've never dealt with something like that.

I've seen GWIAs going down on malform content being received

Any suggestions as to where to start looking for this info? I have 36
messages that are now about 92 hours old that i'd really like to get
moved into the right place. They seem to be just normal GW files
(meaning also that they are encrypted and i can't see their content),
living in mslocal/mshold/gwifd96 in my Internet domain's directory. Can
i just move them into the mslocal/mshold/gwi* directory for the other
GWIA and hope for the best?

Not happy. 😞 Will Novell accept a bug report that says "The GWIA
which produced these files will not start", and just give them the whole
GWIA directory?

Well, i threw the messages in there last night, but as of this morning
nothing has happened. I'm guessing that mshold is not the right place
to put them - anyone got a suggestion?

I solved the problem (i think). Rather than moving files around
manually, i added an override to the domain holding the two GWIAs: i set
the original, broken GWIA to be the primary outbound GWIA, and added the
new, working GWIA2 to be the secondary GWIA. The MTA restarted and the
messages flowed through. Then i removed the override and set the
working GWIA2 back to the primary.

Thanks for your help and suggestions, Ed. Thanks also to Gregg Hinchman
for his article on GWIA high availability under GroupWise 7 (old, but
still useful!) http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/18610.html
which gave me the idea!

Nice work!
