Slow Client Installs

When installing the latest clients, 12+ we have lots of computers that will
sit for 5+ minutes at :

installing ms runtime libraries

These are modern reasonable spec i5 machines.

Hi Andre,

I have noticed the same thing and haven't found an answer/solution to it yet.

Cheers,

i usually install gw client using startup scripts. i'm no friend of the install.bat. so i built my own script.
uninstalling gw client and installing the new version has been proven to be more stable then just upgrading from an old version.

in the past i find that the following sequence works best. client installs just fine.

@msiexec /i yourpathtogwclient\win32\wse3.msi ALLUSERS=1 /qb-! >nul
@msiexec /i yourpathtogwclient\win32\msxml.msi ALLUSERS=1 /qb-! >nul
@yourpathtogwclient\win32\vc_redist_2015.x86 /install /quiet >nul
@yourpathtogwclient\win32\Setup.exe /S /v/qb-! >nul

use setup.cfg for silent install and set "EnableLangDlg=N" in the setup.ini

make sure "Version=14.0" is set in the setup.cfg. don't change to 14.2!!!!

hope this helps.

whats about the other vc runtimes delivered with the client?

here I would
msiexec /i yourpathtogwclient\groupwise.msi TRANSFORM=groupwise.mst
ALLUSERS=1 /qb-! >nul

copy from your server installation the gwtuner folder onto your
workstation and run gwtuner.exe. This will create groupwise.mst

This would not be nessecary.

Just wrote a full install script and tested for new silent/unattended
install:

----
@echo off
setlocal
taskkill /F /IM grpwise.exe
taskkill /F /IM addrbook.exe
taskkill /F /IM notify.exe
pushd "%~dp0"
set GW=/qb!
start /wait vcredist_2008sp1_x86.exe /qn
start /wait vcredist_2012update3_x86.exe /quiet /repair /norestart
start /wait vcredist2013_x86.exe /quiet /repair /norestart
start /wait vc_redist_2015.x86.exe /quiet /repair /norestart
if not exist "%WINDIR%\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\regasm.exe" (
start /wait dotnetfx.exe /q:a /c:"install /q"
)
start /wait msiexec /i wse3.msi /qn
if exist ".\groupwise.mst" set GW=%GW% TRANSFORMS=groupwise.mst
start /wait msiexec /i groupwise.msi %GW%
popd
----

Have to test the behaviour at update process (skip the vc installs).

with regards

BTW: I have no secure test to check for any installed vc module.
HKLM\software\wow6432node\microsoft\visual studio\8.0 and so on will not
be deleted after uninstall, this keys are also no reliably to determine,
if a software is installed or not.
HKLM\software\wow6432node\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall
contains id´s only which are as above not reliably to identify the
correct version.
Same for groupwise.
If you uninstall groupwise, there are remaining keys in
HKLM\software\wow6432node\novell\groupwise. So you can´t check for a reg
key.

Conclusion:
The batch as published works good. Next opportunity I check, if a reg
key in HKLM can add an address book to all users on this machine.

Doesn´t work.
Address book information is stored in registry

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\GroupWise\Internet Directory\Directory1]
"Description"="new address book"
"Server"="your.ldap.server"
"Port"="389"
"Search Root"="o=your search root,c=us"
"fLogin"=dword:00000000
"fSPA"=dword:00000000
"fDefault"=dword:00000000
"fSSL"=dword:00000000
"fTempFile"=dword:00000000
"Limit"="100"
"nTimeout"=dword:00000000

Installing this as system user by management system stores this
information in the wrong place. I tried to move these entries to
HKLM\software.
No luck. Groupwise ignores this section. So you have to distribute the
address book settings separately with "authenticated user" privileges or
via gpo.
