Upgrading groupwise client before upgrading server

Conventional wisdom seems to state that one updates the Groupwise server(s) before upgrading the clients. What are the consequences of upgrading the clients first? We are considering upgrading our clients to 8.0.2 to address a number of problems we've experienced. Our servers would remain at 8.0.1. What's the down side of upgrading in this order, and what's the worst case scenario? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Re: Upgrading groupwise client before upgrading server

Haven't read the specifics with regards to 8.0.2 client and 8.0.1, but
the normal convention is that you can use a prior version on a Newer
GroupWise Domain and PO, but you can't use a newer client on an older
Domain or PO.

Re: Upgrading groupwise client before upgrading server

* psammata,

go ahead, works perfectly fine. My agents are on 8.0.1HP, clients are 8.0.2
The worst thing that could happen is that a certain fix in the 8.0.2 client works only if the agents need to be 8.0.2, too.

Re: Upgrading groupwise client before upgrading server

* Chris,

true for major releases; e.g, you cannot use a GW8 client with a GW7 PO. But different service pack levels can usually be mixed.

Re: Upgrading groupwise client before upgrading server

Beware though, there have been cases where it is an issue. Recently there was an issue where authenticating via eDirectory broke if you client was 8.0.1 on an 8.0 poa. Once the POA was updated all was fine.

Yes, it has happend in the past, but is usually explicitly mentioned in the readme.
The forementioned combo of 8.0.1 on the server and 8.0.2 as a client works fine.

Can you check whether the multi-user-calender works for you? Since I
have updated my client to a sp2-beta version (checked that also with
final sp2 client on fresh machine) the MU-calendar does not remember the
users anymore (between sessions). Every day I have to re-select the
users and until I close the client it remembers this setting. But after
closing and restarting the client, I have to select all users again..

I just want to know if this might be an issue because my backend is
still SP1HP1 (linux). Otherwise I can not deploy this client.

Thanks!

glad to read this. My backend is now SP2, but the mu calendar still
forgets the settings. I will check with an other mailbox..

I'd run some GWchecks after making sure it isn't workstation dependent.
