If that took 15 hours, imagine how long it would have taken if you had
to copy across the wire!

If I may ask... How did you copy? What utility did you use?

Here's another thought...

If your GroupWise files reside on their own partition, and
if you plan to keep the same filesystem,
then this is the probably the fastest way to copy the data:

Use the "dd" command to copy the existing partition to the new disk.
Run it from the current SLES11 SP4 server as root.

e.g. dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/sdb bs=10M

sda3 would be the partition where the GroupWise data resides
sdb is the new drive
if is the input file that is read *
of is the output file that is written *

* Don't get these reversed or you could destroy your GroupWise data. 😞

When I suggested having your GroupWise data on its own drive, what I
should have specified was this:

e.g. dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/sdb1 bs=10M

sda3 would be the partition where the GroupWise data currently resides.
sdb1 is a primary partition on the new drive where the data will reside.

That adds several hops to the whole process, for every file!
Just about anything command line will be faster in your setup.

How much of it might be deleted messages that haven't been purged?
What GWChecks do you have running regularly? Compare to..
http://KonecnyConsulting.ca/gw/gwmnt.html
and make sure you've been checking the logs that there aren't any
persistant errors that just fixing could clear lots of space.

Not much would be in the trash. We archive to Retain every night and then old trash is automatically deleted/purged once it is 5 days old. The user cannot change it.

Here is the maintenance I currently run:

Daily

Structure-Action:

Analyze/Fix Database (User/Message/Document)
1. Structure
2. Fix Problems

Trash-Action:

Expire/Reduce Messages (User/Resources)
1. Expire and reduce trash older than 5 days
2. Include Received/Sent/Calendar/Only retained items

Default Weekly Maintenance Event

Default POA Mailbox/Library Maintenance Actions (Analyze/Fix Database (User/Message/Document)

Structure
Index check
Content
Collect statistics
Attachment File Check
Fix Problems
Update user disk space totals

Also, would the following command work to make an initial copy during the week before the migration and then copy only the changes when the post office if stopped:

cp -R -u -p /source /destination

Copy with recursive, update, and preserve options.

Thanks again!

Dbcopy was designed to access the online GroupWise database. Some utilities
lock the files they access. This can cause corruption of your online
GroupWise database so you have to be careful.

I don’t know what cp will do.

Sounds like a risk. I have scheduled the outage to be consistent with the normal copy I experienced with a snapshot before I attach a new virtual drive and begin the copy. I'd rather have the post office offline for a Saturday than take a chance on Dbcopy causing heartache.

Thanks for all your help. BTW, cp is just the Linux copy command line (I guess the same as GUI copy/paste).

You’re very welcome.

The GUI simplifies things if your command line skills are limited.
Sometimes it will do things just as efficiently but to be sure I would
rather do it from the command line especially for those things that can
take some time to complete.

It is not a good idea to run the Structure and Contents checks
together. There are some known trip ups when they run together. It is
much better to move the Structure and Index check to it's own job well
separate of the Contents job.

It otherwise looks like you have the basic routine in place. I would
add that audit run weekly so that the totals within GWAdmin stay close
to reality so you aren't caught off guard again.
