When will GroupWise 8 be officially supported on a 64 bit OS?

Hello

We run GroupWise 7.03 on SLES10 SP2 x64 (and before that on SLES 9 32
bit). I was advised to run this configuration by someone from Novell, but
reading through the documentation it looks to be an unsupported
configuration?

From the Novell Online Docs: "GroupWise Administration Requirements
32-bit/x86 processor or 64-bit/x86 processor running in 32-bit mode"

Despite being unsupported I have not experienced any issues. I would like
to move on to GroupWise 8 now but I am concerned about this whole 64 bit
thing. Is the documentation out of date in specifying 32 bit OS support
only? Or does the above phrase simply mean that the software will only
run in 32 bit mode on a 64 bit platform? Or am I only hours away from
some major catastrophe!!! On the download page there appears to be
reference to a x64 version ...
"30 Jan 2009 - GroupWise 8.0 Hot Patch 1 Linux Full US and MULTI x86-64
Security Alert". So I am left totally confused as to the status of this.

I want to run a 64 bit OS moving forward as I have encountered bad issues
with SLES 10 on 32 bit platforms under significant load (admittedly only
when running NSS) so some clarification would be much appreciated.

This is already in "review" for the documentation, because it has been
confirmed directly by Novell that GW8 runs just fine on a 64 bit OS. GW
itself is a 32 bit process, so it will be "in 32 bit mode", but the OS can
happily be a 64 bit operating system.

Re: When will GroupWise 8 be officially supported on a 64 bit OS?

GW does not run fine on any of my x64 Windows Terminal Servers. I keep getting a C++ error that several others get as well. I've asked the list, this forum, and another forum and there is no fix or troubleshooting that I could find. Annoyingly, those Novell persons on the list didn't respond to this issue, and they should have. This issue is delaying GW8 for our users on Terminal Servers.

Umm, why? There is a 64-bit Version of Windows 2003 too.

For your problem: Groupwise8 is not currently supported (and doesn't
work, as you found out) on Windows2008, neither 32 nor 64bit. W2008
support will come with SP1.

Exactly. On SUPPORTED 64 bit platforms, GW8 is fine. Windows 2008 isn't
supported at all right now.

To clarify, the GW8 client isn't supported on Windows 2008. The SP1
client will be supported, but in the meantime the GW8 agents *are*
supported on 2008.

Re: When will GroupWise 8 be officially supported on a 64 bit OS?

I am feeling pretty burned about this right now. I had been telling my organization that GW8 client was to be supported on Windows 2008 server as advertised and it does not. This is just another reason for my higher-ups to move to Exchange. Windows 2008 has been out for a year now and Novell should make all efforts to get the client working. Customers should not have to wait for a major service pack for this critical issue.

Re: When will GroupWise 8 be officially supported on a 64 bit OS?

There was chatter about it on the list.

Regardless, it won't work. But Outlook does. See the problem? My management does.

"Chatter" in the forums or elsewhere isn't an official statement.

Is there a business case requiring you to implement Windows 2008 right
now? If not, then management needs to be made aware of this, as well.
Unless there is a specific business requirement and Windows Server 2003
absolutely doesn't meet this need, then you have a workable solution
today: use Windows Server 2003. Windows 2003 still has mainstream
support for well over a year, and extended support for over six years.

Re: When will GroupWise 8 be officially supported on a 64 bit OS?

Yes, there is a business case: we are retiring older Citrix machines and moving to Terminal Services (no Citrix) in a completely new environment. At this point I'll just have to keep a 2003 server around for GroupWise. Not a big deal but I'd prefer to not have to do it.

And by Fall you should have a solution to get rid of that as well.

I suffered this error before with the Novell client Vista/2008 until I downloaded and configured new nciman64 files on a 64 bit system.
Our GW8 works fine on x64 however the download and config files were for our Zen bundle were build on a Vista OS. Not sure if this is any help, but thats my 2 cnts.
