does GW IM only work with GW?

I do not have GW and I need an IM, would we have to install GW to use
IM or
can it run with out having GW?

Re: does GW IM only work with GW?

Although Messenger integrates with GroupWise it does not require it.
Messenger does require Novell's directory. As far as I know, the only
way you can currently get it is through GW 6.5 licensing - not sure
about any other possibilities.

Re: does GW IM only work with GW?

Groupwise IM actually has very little to do with Groupwise... I'm
buggered
if I can work out why they market it as Groupwise IM --- it's
installed
title is Novell IM... strange!
Anyways, I installed and tested while it was still in public beta and
I
installed it on a test server, test tree, with no groupwise ever
having been
installed. No worries.

I'm now running it in the live tree just for our internal I.T.
department
staff at the present and it's fantastic.. so useful.

AFAIK, e-Directory is all you need... Groupwise don't come into it.
(licensing is another story..)

While I'm here, if you drag and drop a file into an instant message
(in the
hope of being able to transfer it to the person on the other end), you
get a
"Your administrator has disabled this" type of message.... anyone know
what
the deal is here ??

🙂 cheers
Dave

Re: does GW IM only work with GW?

Dave,

Is it possible to drag and drop files into an instant message? It
sounds
like you're further ahead on this than I am. Anyway....I've been
experimenting with the user policies included with Messenger. If you

drill down and expand the Messenger Service object in ConsoleOne,
select
the policy container, right click the default policy and select
properties, you can change any kind of policy setting that might
prevent
you from accessing the features included with Messenger.

Re: does GW IM only work with GW?

Hi You download the latest EVAL version of MESSENGER, it looks like
they have removed the FILE TRANSFER feature for now. I know it was planned
in the Novell PRD.

This thing needs file transfer to offload the GroupWise systems.

Re: does GW IM only work with GW?

I've had a look, but I admit it was only a quick glance.. will have
another
lookies.

One thing I loved was the ability to auto populate a user's contact
list ---
I've auto populated our IT staff's list with the rest of the
department..
neat! We all use it and it's a big help, especially considering we're

spread across 7 campuses.

Re: does GW IM only work with GW?

Last I heard, Novell's Groupwise Messenger supports only intranet
instant messaging. I heard rumor that Novell may support/integrate with other
IM platforms like Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, or others at some later date, but
there were no actual dates stated.

Re: does GW IM only work with GW?

Haven't tried.. but can only assume it would work -- you'd have to
open up
the port you're running IM on thru the firewall and set up a
NAT..guess it
depends how comfortable you are in opening up access to one of your
eDir
servers 🙂
